Santa’s Southern Workshop

If Santa Claus has to make a pit stop on Leyte to feed his reindeer or resupply his big, bright red Christmas Presents sack, then, it looks like the Palo Library is his stop over location based on this holiday photo of 2011. The snapshot was taken through the windshield of a moving vehicle, which accounts for the heavy coloration at the top of the snapshot and the circles reflected on the building and is a reminder that sometimes in life what we see is not always what we think we see. by Samuel E. Warren Jr.

As a little boy in the United States, I have several memories of “Christmas In The Ozarks.”

As a young man in college, I have several memories of “Christmas On The Job.”

CHRISTMAS STAR LOGO PHOTO THUMBNAIL TWOAs a man in the military, I have several memories of “Christmas Around The World” or, more correctly, “Christmas In The Pacific.”

Christmas 2012 is not the first Christmas, I celebrated in the Republic of the Philippines. Christmas 1988 was my first Christmas in the Philippine Islands, which is a “Single G.I. Christmas Story.”

My wife, Christy Warren and I returned to the Republic of the Philippines in December 2011, which resulted in a “Fast Christmas.”

Extended Family Concept

The Philippines is one of those nations that practices the “Extended Family” concept. Americans tend to think of “Immediate Family,” which is Mom, Dad, the kids, and sometimes grandpa, grandma, and the aunts and uncles.

The Philippines’ “Extended Family” concept is exceptional because it takes into account other relatives, which can be distant aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Taken to the extreme, the concept is like taking a Manila telephone book and expecting everyone listed under A to Z to show up on Christmas Day.

Unleash The Relatives !

As Christmas 2011 approaches, it becomes apparent that Christy Saldana Warren is related to most of the past, present and future delegates of The United Nations.

By Christmas Eve 2011, apparently the only person in The Republic Of The Philippines that Christy was not related to is The President Of The Philippines.

It seemed that everyone who could walk, stagger, hire a pedicab, tricycle, jeepney or hitch a ride had passed through the doors for the “Home For The Holidays” celebration. A few people took the time to identify themselves as “friends”, while many just smiled, nodded and socialized with other family members.

Christmas Eve 2011 and Christmas Day 2011 proved to be a wonderful celebration. People, food, kids, joy, excitement, storytelling, socializing. No script writer in Hollywood or Manila could come up with a script for a more joyous family holiday celebration.

Christmas Glitch

Every nation has those situations and conditions that allow some people to profit at the expense of others. In the Philippines, the cultural “Extended Family Concept” is an ideal situation to be taken to the extreme to take advantage of people and the overall compassionate message of humanity at Christmas.

Jet Lag, Time Drag

The Fast Christmas” celebration took advantage of the fact that we stepped off the airplane in the middle of December. It would take a couple of days for us to travel from the island of Luzon to the island of Leyte. While we would spend a couple of days in Manila before a quick Christmas trip to Angeles City, our bodies were still suffering from “jet lag”.

Our minds were adjusting to the “International Date Line time difference of 14 hours between the Philippines and Missouri because The Show Me State was on “Daylight Savings Time”, which added an hour to the normal 13-hour time difference.

I had looked forward to the trip to Angeles City as “My Military Mecca Pilgrimage”, I could return to my beloved Clark Air Base and see the changes since the eruption of Mount Pinatubo. Unfortunately, this was one of those “side trips” that you make to say, “Hi” and “Bye.”

Sad Story Singers

Christmas The Season is the time of year when “Everyone On Planet Earth Has A Sad Story To Tell.” One of the other 364 days of the year, people might ignore your story, but, the Christmas Season gets into a person’s psychological makeup and the whole “Peace On Earth, Goodwill Toward Men” scenario kicks in and a person listens to “the sad story.”

If you are born to a rich family, then, you probably have to really dig into the family history to find a sad story to sing. The rest of us, just think back a couple of months and find a sad story. Some people truly do have a sad story in life that begins around Day One.

Many people are just disappointed not to have been born to a mom or dad listed in the Fortune 500 with a fat bank account and a portfolio that list numbers with several series of zeroes after the numbers.

Sometimes a Sad Story maybe true. Sometimes a Sad Story is a ploy with a fiscal ending aimed at your wallet or purse. One example is the man, who told me, “My son could use a computer for his education.” No doubt.

Of course, smiling at someone, during Christmas Season and replying, “Get A Job”, would probably be considered politically incorrect and downright callous. Nonetheless, I am too skinny to ever be mistaken for Santa Claus anywhere in the world.

I came from hard-working parents and the “work ethics” of the Ozarks and Texas is hardwired into my DNA, so “I will try to help people, who help themselves”, but , I remember the old Ozarks’ saying, “ Charity starts at home.”

Find The Family

I retired from the military in 1997. Christy and I had left Clark Air Base, Republic of the Philippines to go to another assignment only a few months before Mount Pinatubo solved the whole “US Bases In The Philippines” debate in clouds of volcanic ash.

The eruption of Mount Pinatubo cut off all communications between Christy and her family in the Philippines for the next 18 years, both of us tried everything we could think of to locate her family in the Philippine Islands.

In 2008, we got lucky and communications were reestablished and she began talking to the family on a regular basis. We considered moving to the Philippines.

Parents, Plan, Priority

Before we left the US, Christy and I discussed that a “rice mill” might be a good idea in a country setting in the Philippines. At the time, all the family members in the Philippines seemed to agree.

Everyone knew the family story that essentially Christy s mom had made Christy swear an oath to do everything possible to “Keep The Family Together.” Everyone knew that my mother had taught me, “Family Is Everything.” The pledges to our parents were the type of ploys that could be used to try and make a person feel guilty.

Christy had made it known to the family that her priority was that the family work together to succeed, so that everyone would benefit in the long run through the years ahead. The concept of “Teamwork” seemed to be an idea that everyone was willing to work for.

Business Banter

Christy had come up with a business plan that would allow every member of the family to have a role in the family business. Before we left the States, it seemed everyone was anxious to hit the beach at Leyte and do the family business of running a rice mill.

Before we left the States, a rice mill had been built in Barangay Baras. Christy and I discussed other ideas for a family business. Family members, offered up their own ideas.

In the United States, the idea of involving relatives in a family business began to disappear around the time of the American Civil War.

By the 1900s, Americans were known around the world as the people who tell you “Never Ever Involve Family In A Business You Own.” I had heard that admonition my entire life. From what I had witnessed in life, it seemed like sound advice.

However, my wife, Christy is a Filipina and we were returning to the Philippines. I had, no doubt, if everyone was willing to work with Christy everyone would succeed.

The Boss

I had been the military man. I remain the reporter and photographer. My wife, Christy, like my mother, was obviously the business woman. I had the luxury of “Being Married To The Boss.”

The drawback to any business is “Everyone wants to be the chief and no one wants to be just one of the braves.” The braves forget, in a business sense, “the person with the wampum makes the rules.”

As the year wore on, it became obvious that some family members had not been all that excited about the original idea of the rural rice mill. Christy being a woman in a traditionally “macho” culture did not help in her trying to win over family members.

In the Latin-based cultures, like the Philippines, the eldest male child is expected to “take charge” and call the overall shots for the family. Then, of course, you factor in the Asian cultural concept of “Save Face” and women usually stand in the shadows in a “be seen, but not heard role.”

Men don’t always appreciate working for a woman. In the US, men not being able to work with a woman is an idea that has really disappeared since the 1970s.

But, there are places in the world, where men really have problems when “The Boss” is a woman. It seemed some of the men really didn’t want to think of Christy as “The Boss.”

Blame The Americans – Everyone Else Does

UNCLE SAM

Thank God for The United States Of America !

Without the US to blame, for everything from bad weather to the price of tea in China, many citizens of the world would have to find something or someone else to blame if good old Uncle Sam wasn’t around. Thus, the US got some of the blame when Christy and I didn’t jump at a business idea. Someone would grumble, “Christy spent too long in the US.”

Christy The Filipina

Christy Saldana is an independent woman, who had her own ideas about life before I ever married her and she stepped off the airplane on to US soil. People who tried to “blame the US” knew nothing about Christy or the United States.

Christy is one of those people, who has worked for and earned everything she has in life. She had earned her own way in life. When I met her, I was impressed by her confidence and ambition.

Side Trip Shaft

After the Angeles City holiday pilgrimage, we were back on the road headed to a ferry for the island of Leyte. Our bodies still dealt with the prolonged “jet lag” and our minds were still adjusting to the “time drag”

My first major disappointment since returning to the Philippines came with the “side trip” to Angeles City. Too much time had been wasted on trying to get everyone together.

We ended up going to Clark Air Base “too late” for me to be able to enjoy looking around the base. We didn’t have time that night to see the base. We didn’t have time to spend a day or so in the area, so that we could visit the base. This is one of those decisions that did not sit well with me.

I had looked forward to the visit to Clark. Anger is the emotion that I felt at being denied the opportunity to take my time and look around the base. Resentment is the other emotion that stuck in my craw. And, the word, Mad, is an accurate description of how I felt when we left Angeles City.

Back On The Road

Naturally, we were trying to get to Leyte to be able to rest after the long plane flight and to celebrate Christmas.

The ride to the ferry off the island of Leyte was a long ride because I was mad. Nonetheless, I was ready to finally kick my shoes off and unpack my suitcases. Fast Christmas had kept us off balance and on the road.

If you want to do business on Christmas Day, then, tell the people you want to do business with. If you want to promote a business idea, then, you have to be willing to put some of your own money on the line.

In the ideas that were being suggested to us, everyone wanted to be “the idea man” and leave all of the investment of money to Christy and Sam.  If you try to wrap up and slide a fiscal agenda into the holiday all you will get for the year is a bundle of switches and lumps of coal in your fiscal plans.

The Jet Lag, Time Drag, Slide Trip Shaft, and the On The Road, factors are the lumps of coal that pushed Christy and I into Christmas Day 2011. I considered Christmas Day 2011 a Fast Christmas. The result is the day became the Fiscal Christmas of 2011.

The Worser Of Two Evils A Democrat Overseas Political Editorial

Rewind 1972

The Worser of Two Evils

The Election of 2012

by Samuel E. Warren Jr.

Goodbye, President Obama !

Mitt Romney has the nomination for the Republican Candidate for President of the United States of America.

Big Whoop !

President Obama does not deserve to win re-election. Mitt Romney is just another in a long list of rich Republicans, who seeks to warm the seat in The Oval Office.

Neither Obama or Romney deserves to be:

“The President Of The United States Of America.”

Talking Suits

President Obama and Mr. Romney are, “Talking Suits” – the 21st Century Version of Max Head Room Becomes President – a character gets some phrases to spit out of The Boob Tube and voters fall for it – Welcome to American Presidential Elections from 1964 through 2011.

President Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton all came to “The Oval Office” with a plan, which was obvious from Day One. The rest of the so-called presidents from 1964 on have been “winging it – on a broken wing.” Those presidents relied on their party to get them elected and the party came through.

Popularity Contest

In 1960, the Campaign for President of the United States Of America became a “Popularity Contest.” Political strategists knew the handsome United States Navy PT Boat Commander would win the hearts of women voters and men would want to be the handsome young Democrat, who turned ladies heads and had the strong family and the proud military tradition behind him.

It is highly unlikely without the Death of President Kennedy, that Lyndon Baines Johnson could come any closer to The White House than to be on a tour. LBJ was a tall, grandfather type man, whose presidential speeches are best used when you are out of sleeping pills and need a good night’s sleep.

Puppet People Presidents

The Popularity Contest strategy really hasn’t worked well since 1960, but, when the majority of candidates are “paper doll” characters with lackluster backgrounds and bureaucratic administrative skills, then, voters have to go with the “best guess” theory, which always leaves America with puppets, rather than presidents.

It is time for both parties to once again start looking for “Leaders” and not “Puppet People Presidents”

Alas, The Presidential Campaign of 2012 seems to be another “Ho-Hum, Dumb-Dumb Personality Contest.”

The Worser Of Two Evils American Presidential

Campaign 1972 and 2012

But, 2012 is really “The Presidential Campaign Of 1972 – Again – Press Play.”

“Welcome To The American Presidential “Worser Of Two Evils” Campaign.”

In 1972, the only real issue was the Vietnam War. The American people wanted it ended.

In 2012, the only real issue is the US and Global Economy. The American people want their Dollar to once again have value and be able to put groceries on the table, pay the gas, electric, heating bills and provide a retirement income.

War Election Campaigns

Wars are popular and easy campaign issues, the candidate unfurls an American flag, has his speech writers dash off some “wave the flag” patriotic speeches. The candidate does some photo ops with American military veterans and poses for pictures with active duty troops.

Come Election Day, Americans’ “Red, White and Blue Adrenalin” kicks in and they rush to the polls and cast their ballots for that “baseball playin’, apple pie eatin’, I love my Mother, drive a Chevrolet and “support our troops” candidate.

Of course, once the candidate is sworn in and on the job, American veterans and active duty military people are once again dumped into the political toy box, next to “the plastic green army men of yesteryear” to wait for another four years.

In 1972, Americans wanted a leader. One of the popular slogans of that election was “This is no election. We have to choose between the worser of two evils: Republicans or Democrats.”

The American people had lost faith in their so-called leaders and didn’t believe either party could end the War. The people were right.

“Vietnamization” was not and end to the War; it was an “auto-pilot” function that allowed “Tricky Dick” Nixon to do his own thing while the War ended by reducing the amount of money being sent to Vietnam and “orders” were cut to send US troops back home.

There was no “Exit” strategy to Vietnam and the only “Mission Accomplished” was to get “Tricky Dick” in the White House.

In 2012, Americans again want “a leader.”

America does not need another Party Puppet President ; America needs a Leader.

Neither party is up to the challenge.

Republican Presidential Solutions:

ALWAYS Taxes and War

American Republican Presidents have only two answers for any crisis that faced America in the 20th and early 21st Century. Taxes and War. Look at US History since the end of World War II – Republicans raise taxes or go to War. George H. W. Bush hit the lottery – he did both: he raised taxes and did the Kuwait thing.

In 1972, the Republicans outsmarted the Democrats the GOP pointed the finger at the Democrat and shouted, “Dove.” Americans freaked because they thought the Democrats would “surrender America” to end the War. “Tricky Dick” Nixon, of course, won by a landslide.

Bad President

In 2012, Republicans are ready to win. They have pointed the finger at President Obama and shouted, “bad president.”

Would someone care to remind the GOP of “George W. Bush and his Administration ? “

Two Wars and a busted US Economy under the Bush Administration – I would call that a “bad president.”

The US Economy started to unravel in October 2007, when the Baby Bush Administration was still holding court in Washington D.C.

Since that modern day Herbert Hoover Administration “propped” up the economy until Election Day, Americans “forgot: the financial sewer that was busting below ground and turning the American Dollar into play money.

President Obama’s Nice Guy Mistake

President Obama made the “President Jimmy Carter Mistake,” he came to Washington D.C., a nice guy and figured his fellow Americans were ready to get the country back on track.

In 2008, the American people thought they were voting for “A Gunslinger” or “A New Sheriff In Town.” What we got was a nice guy, who didn’t realize in a Crisis, some Americans step up and get busy. Some Americans have to know they are “out gunned” and the man or woman in charge is “In Charge !”

The American people in 2008 wanted a new “FDR” or a new “Harry S. Truman”, who wasn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and get busy. President Obama thought “holding hands and singing “Onward Christian Soldier” would work.” It didn’t.

Take Charge”

President Obama needed to “Take Charge.” He didn’t. He let “America’s Clown College” – the Congress of the United States of America – once again, call the shots.

The Congress of the United States of America only worries about one thing – “Re-election.” Congress is a sweet job, tons of perks and the paycheck is so fat these days that Federal Law keeps the salaries of Congressmen and Senators from being known to the public.

Once a freshman Congressman or senator is elected, then, they can concentrate on “re-election.” The rest of the day to day business is simple: “Don’t Rock The Boat.” “Play The Game.”

The youngsters vote the way the old heads want them to and they learn how to keep getting re-elected until they retire or die in office.

The Congress of the United States is no longer a respective legislative body – it is a Federally subsidized Retirement Home For America’s Most Gifted Con Artists.

President Obama is unfortunately – finished.

If he want be re-elected he needs to find a way to deliver a biblical Miracle like walking on water or raising people from the dead because he never understood an American president is suppose to be “Presidential.”

Presidential

Guts And Gonads”

An American President is suppose to have the “guts and gonads” to stand toe to toe with Satan or God and be able to look both in the eyes and do what has to be done. 20th Century Presidents: FDR, Harry S. Truman, Dwight David Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton have all understood The President Of The United States Of America is at all times “Presidential.”

Presidential Pink Slip

The American People already know President Obama is a “One Hit Wonder.” American Democrats should realize President Obama has run his race and need to find a candidate in the ranks, who can and will do the job.

The ole “incumbency” routine is nice, when the person in charge is fighting the good fight and pushing for forward movement in public policy and the economy. President Obama is still letting Congress keep him manacled, shackled and under house arrest.

He is still playing “Nice Guy,” while the Republicans are in their Bastille mode and handing out pitchforks, shovels, hoes, mattocks and directions to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Democrats it may be unprecedented, but, to push America Forward the time has come to give President Obama his “pink slip” and find a Democrat, man or woman, who is “Presidential” and ready to do the job to get America moving.

American Republican Presidency In A Nutshell

More Taxes, More War

While President Obama is already yesterday’s news; Romney is a rich, conservative Republican, who will only have two choices as an American Republican president – raise taxes or go to War.

US History shows Republican presidents lack creativity and imagination. Republican Theodore Roosevelt was “Too Good A President” and the Republicans kicked the colonel out of their “tea party,” because he had too much individual initiative to get things done.

Ronald Reagan also had too much individual initiative to get things done. A Democrat, who crossed to the Dark Side and became a Republican. Reagan was on a roll – then, the Assassination Attempt happened.

US History, especially since the end of World War II, demonstrates that Republican presidents are “puppets,” who understand they are there to have their strings pulled. They can do their “photo ops” with everyone from the Boy Scouts to the Daughters of the American Revolution.

They can carefully manage their historical legacy to ensure they get a presidential library built in their name and have a future United States Navy aircraft carrier named after them – but, the Republican president can not stray too far from party policy otherwise he end up in the company of Herbert Hoover and George W. Bush as “bad economic presidents.”

Hollywood Heroes

President Ronald Reagan was the first American president who had been an actor before becoming president.

From the founding of America until around the time of the Civil War candidates for president were farmers or military leaders. When America, as a nation, moved from the farm to the city, the whole “Lame Lincoln Lawyer Sillyness” kicked in. Americans bought off that they needed professional paper pushers to run the presidency and Congress.

America’s Democrats and Republicans still look for the rise through the ranks lawyer types to run for president, especially since the end of 1964. Time have changed.

America needs Leaders in The White House and Congress, who can respond on the fly and no they have made the right decision.

Internet and computer gurus will probably be the next evolution of Leaders who rise to national leadership.

In 2012, Democrats and Republicans should look to Hollywood. Henry Fonda always came off “Presidential” in his movies. It is too bad he never campaigned for the office.

Democrats and Republicans should pay more attention to the movies.

Michael Douglas in “The American President” and Harrison Ford in “Air Force One” are two actors that I would rush to the polls to vote for.  Martin Sheen portrayed the “President Of The United States Of America” in the series, “The West Wing.”  Mr. Sheen is another actor that if he ran for president I would be anxious to cast my ballot for.

Actors who have portrayed a “President Of The United States,” I’m sure have a better understanding of the overall commitment of the office and the job than some lackluster lawyer.

Lights, Camera, Mr. President ! ”

Since American Presidential Elections are National Popularity Contest both parties should start looking at great American actors, who have earned the respect and admiration of generation of Americans, rather, than just another “lackluster lawyer.”

Plus, actors often portray people in the United States Armed Forces. Once upon a time, members of Congress would usually serve in the military, Few Congressmen or Senators any more serve on active duty, so an actor who portrayed somebody on active duty already has more “Time In Service” and “Time In Grade” that the members of Congress.

Casting offices hire the actors for their roles, thus, I’m sure if Democrats and Republicans keep wanting to do their “Transition Team” scenarios, there will be plenty of people, who can step up and do the job to support the president. Hollywood hires technical consultants for movies, they should be able to teach the Democrats and Republicans how to hire the people to do the job.

Democrats and Republicans, “Fire The Lawyers; Hire the Actors.”

The 2012 Choice ?

Thus, 2012 is stacking up like 1972 American voter have a Democrat and a Republican to vote for.

Like 1972, Americans can only expect the parties to change.

What is the November 2012 Election Day Choice ? Buy a dart board, label each area: Democrat or Republican. Throw your darts and see which party The Fickled Finger Of Fate chooses most often. Then, Election Day you can blame Fate and not have to blame yourself for not having a “Leadership Choice.

2013 Hoovervilles ?

In 2013, Americans will still be angry about a “Mosquito-Infested Standing Water Swamp Economy.” A new Republican president and his new Republican “groupie” Congress will only have the standard two choices: “Raise Taxes and Go To War.”

Beginning in 2013, American Voter’s livelihood and wallets will remain destined for “Hooverville.” If the Republicans take the White House and Congress, then, American Voters’ sons and daughters should start paying attention to the news to try and figure out the next “Vietnam” that they will be “drafted” to serve in.

You can go ahead and put away your crystal ball, while America won’t have any new proactive, on the job, responsible, action-oriented leadership in 2013 and beyond, at least, President Obama will get his presidential library and Americans can start planning the Mitt Romney Presidential Library.

What ever happened to “Leaders” who worked and campaigned

for “The Highest Office In The Land ?”

Samuel E. Warren Jr. Editor’s Note Epilogue

I had finished writing this editorial, August 31, 2012. I had began editing the copy, when the Samar-Leyte Earthquake happened. The lights went out. While the laptop still ran off battery power, I decided to put the editorial away and concentrate on the events of the moment. September 4, 2012, I went back and read over the copy before arriving at the final draft.

America needs Leadership. The Democrats and The Republicans have quit looking for “Leaders” and go for party people who look good in a business suit and in front of a TV camera.

The American Presidential Campaign of 2012 is 1972 revamped, but, unless either party can reveal a Leader before November, then, “The Worser Of Two Evils Campaign” will continue to unfold to another “Ho-Hum, Dumb, Dumb Election Day.
