The Lone Star State Governor. . .Rides Again !

leave a comment »

Editor’s Note:

I “Respect” Governor James Richard “Rick” Perry, of Texas.

Seldom do I have any use for American politicians. “Respect” is a quality I seldom associated with scumbag American politicians.

Since the Dawn Of The 21st Century, I believe more and more American politicians are becoming more and more related to and associated with Muslim jihadists’ terrorists camel humper scumbags.

Thus, I have little use for most American politicians.

I have absolutely no use for any Muslim on the planet.

I have lived long enough to know what a criminal and a terrorist looks like and sounds like — A Muslim — is a criminal and a terrorist !

I “Respect” Governor Perry because he is a Texan and an American.

His “Tour Of Duty” in “The Executive Mansion” proves he is his own man.

He served in the United States Air Force, which makes him an “American G.I.” and a military man.

It is “Stupid” to elect anyone to the position of “President Of The United States Of America” to discharge the duties of “Commander-In-Chief”, who did not don a uniform and at some point serve his or her country and fellow Americans.

America’s Founding Fathers were “Wise”, but even they could make mistakes.

The fact that America’s Founding Fathers did not make “Military Service” a requirement to serve as president is “The Worst Mistake”, which the Founding Fathers made.

Governor Perry is more “Religious” than I want a president to be.

I don’t do Religion.

However, Governor Perry is a Pisces — American President and General George Washington was a Pisces and it worked well for America.

Three Cheers for Governor Perry !

I hope he “Runs” for president in 2016.

America Needs Leadership.

The Lone Star State Governor. . .
Rides Again !

by Samuel E. Warren Jr.

I am a Texan.
Obviously, I am an American.
I am a Democrat.
I do not Defend Republicans.
I “Wish” I was an International War Crimes Prosecutor, I would spend my days, gathering evidence to “Award” a Gitmo Jail Cell to “Every Senior American Republican Official On The Planet” to include former GOP Presidents.
Texas Governor Rick Perry, a Republican, is “The Exception.”
He is a Texan.

The Universe creates an Immortal Race Of Rednecks, called, “Texans”.
A “Texan”, is independent, stubborn and almost always arrogant person. Arrogance doesn’t mean your “Wrong”; it does mean “Panty Waste People” will not like you. The positive trait of Arrogance is Confidence. Arrogant people are always Confidant people.
Governor Perry really came to the attention of “The World”, the “International News Media” and, no doubt, The White House, a few weeks ago, when he called up “The National Guard” to be deployed to the border between Texas and Mexico.
Governor Perry is again, in the news. This time, he has donned his Stetson and saddled up to “ride again.”  This time his “Range War” is politics and mid-term elections.

He made a decision.

Texas Democrats are looking for votes and headlines.

Thus, Texas Democrats are trying to start a political brushfire, which will keep the governor from riding hard and fast into The White House.

Texas Democrats have shot themselves in the foot.

As governor, Mr. Perry is charged to serve, protect and lead, “The Citizens Of The Lone Star State — Texas.” In the footsteps of “The Legendary Immortal General Samuel Houston”, Governor Perry is doing just that.
Travis County is home to Austin — the capitol of Texas. “Politics ! Serious Politics ! The kind of ‘Serious Politics’ that impacts wallets, purses and retirement finances — Serious Politics !”
Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg is a Democrat. Governor Rick Perry, is Republican and a potential 2016 GOP presidential candidate.
The problem is the district attorney had a drunk driving incident. The governor, evidently does not have a favorable opinion of people who drink or, at least, people who get in trouble, where the use of alcohol is involved.
The issue, as outlined in “The Media”, is the governor decided to stop State funds bound for Travis County, Texas. According to the news story, I read, the governor had told Miss Lehmberg if she did not step down, then, he would withhold state funds.
The Media and, of course, The Democrats have considered the governor’s statement , “A Threat.”
Stupid.
Without “Threats”, Religion would cease to function in America.
The Traditional American Religious Threat : “If you do not accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord, Savior and Messiah, you will ‘Go Straight To Hell’ !”
Without “Threats”, Politics in America would grind to a halt.
“If you vote for Candidate A, you will regret it.”
Most “Threats” are just hot air, which someone who is upset has to get something off their chest.
The “Serious Threats” are the ones were people are willing to use some form of violence to get their way.
Governor Perry is entitled to his opinions in his personal Life. As governor, he does the job to the best of his abilities for citizens.
The governor might be harsh, in his opinion, on state employees and their use of alcohol. But, such an attitude would be his opinion. In his opinion, if he does not feel a state employee is doing their job, then, it is up to the governor to hold the person accountable.
Threat ?
No.
When Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg came home from the office, “If” a company of “Texas Rangers” had cordoned off her neighborhood and tanks of the Texas National Guard were rolling into the area around her home, while fighters of the Texas National Guard flew combat air patrol in the skies over her home — that would be “A Threat” — an obvious “Threat.”
The phony “Threat” being played out in the International News Media is “American Mid-Term Politics.”
Texan and American Democrats “Want” to shut down Governor Perry as a possible 2016 contender for “The White House.”
The American Republican Party is always “FULL” of idiots who should not be school crossing guards, yet, some of the morons make a run for The White House.
Texas Governor Perry is smart and tough.

If American Democrats were “Smart”, they would approach the governor about running as a Democrat for The White House in 2016.
Former First Lady Hillary Clinton is The Democrat’s Best Choice and The Democrat’s Best Front Runner.
The Former First Lady and Former American Secretary Of State made One Major Mistake.

“IF” she does not “FIX” the “Mistake” quickly and convincingly, she will never sit in “The Oval Office.”

The Mistake : Mrs. Clinton made public her objection to guns.

In America, you can have all kinds of wacky and off-the-wall views and people will just nod or walk by.
You “Threaten” The 2nd Amendment and Americans look at you.

You talk about “Taking Away An American’s Gun” and you can hear the round being chambered in their minds.
By the time you return home — every “Good Ole’ Boy” and every “Good Ole’ Girl” in the United States has already heard your “Threat”, the NRA has already mobilized their lawyers and media professionals.
The “Good Ole’ Boys” and The “Good Ole’ Girls” have already, cleaned, serviced and loaded their pistols, handguns, shotguns, rifles and other firearms and have sat down on the sofa with an ice cold beer to watch the evening news.

Americans Love Their Firearms

Americans “Respect” and know how to “Use” their firearms — Safely.

Only “Death” separates an American from his or her firearm.
I respect Mrs. Clinton. I believe she would be an outstanding American president. However, I am a ‘Good Ole’ Boy’.
I like the “Right To Have A Firearm” and as an “American, I have the right to own and use a firearm.”
If Mrs. Clinton, does not change her position on “The 2nd Amendment” I will not support or vote for her.
I would hope someone will approach Governor Perry to walk away and “Cross-over” from the half-wit, Bible-beating GOP.

By 2016, “The Muslim Horde Threat” Will Be The Real And Obvious Threat To The United States Of America and The World.
By 2016, it will be obvious to even “Slow-witted Americans that Islam The Global Criminal And Terrorists Movement is “NO Religion.”
If Americans do not have a “Strong Commander-In-Chief” in place to lead and destroy the invaders, then, America becomes a nations of religious idiots killing one another or pieces of Real Estate from sea to sea.
I can’t imagine a Texan, who will hand over their Stetson to wear a Turban.
Three Cheers for Governor Perry ! He is doing his job. Even if, you, don’t agree with him.
Democrats — Wake Up !
Time to attempt to “Recruit Governor Perry” to run as a Democrat in 2016.

President Barack Obama edits his remarks in the Oval Office prior to making a televised statement detailing the mission against Osama bin Laden, May 1, 2011.

by Samuel E. Warren Jr.

Brooms have been pushed and the residue of The Election of 2012 is now in the dumpsters waiting to be hauled to the nearest city dump or recycling center.

In the Ozarks, The Day After An Election, Stone County, Missouri Old Timers, would laugh and joke, “Time to get out the picks and shovels because there are a lot of graves to dig today.” The purpose of the political joke was to poke fun at the politicians who “lost” an election and remind people that it was time to get back to work.

Good Day, Mr. President.”

Now, that “The Election” is over, President Obama can get back, “On The Job.”

In the Republic of the Philippines, the US Election has been covered for the last two days. The first announcements were the standard, “And The Winner Is.”

The United States Ambassador to the Republic of the Philippines made his speech to say that President Obama had been re-elected.

News crews tracked down the happy “Democrats Abroad USA” chapter in Manila and got their reactions of sheer joy.

One man gave a beautiful quote of how he spent four days in Colorado knocking on doors and talking to people: “I told them I came 8,000 miles to ask them to vote for the Democrats and President Obama.”

Today, November 8, 2012 – The Philippine news media is looking at the US Election and comparing how Democracy works in the US and how Democracy works in the Philippines.

The news coverage is optimistic that President Obama is going to work on the Immigration policy in America.

I’m optimistic that President Obama knows that “The American People have his back” and support him in his efforts to move domestic and foreign policy forward, in an effort to rebuild the US Economy.

Election Fallout

Most people shrug their shoulders and get on with their lives.

For people, who are passionate and devoted massive amounts of time and effort to an election, the days following a loss is a period of readjustment. If your candidate lost, you can feel “let down.” You wonder if there was something else that you could of done ?

In America, we like to believe that “We are Good Losers.” We are not.

Sportsmanship

The idea of “Sportsmanship” says that the losers should be able to congratulate the winners and forget the game or the election.

The Sportsmanship idea is a good idea, but, it is not realistic — when people devote time, effort and energy to a cause people expect a positive result.

______________________________________________________________________

If every American in America and overseas would devote one tenth of the energy they normally waste on sports to watching politicians, America would have the most informed, pro-active, action-oriented democracy on the face of the planet. “

– Samuel E. Warren Jr.

Competition

America’s National Cultural Philosophy

In America, the loss after an election can be a heavy weight to the individual because from the time you are a toddler in America you are taught to “Compete.”

You step out the door in the morning on your way to school and you are in the “Competition” mode. The “Competition” philosophy teaches you are suppose to “Win” at all costs. “Loss” is never acceptable in the American cultural psychology.

Dog Eat Dog”

Americans are the most competitive people on the planet.

We are taught “The World Is Dog Eat Dog.”

We, Americans are taught, “You Pull Yourself Up By Your Bootstraps.”

Loss” and coming in second place is really “Unacceptable” in the American culture.

Look at the History of American Political Candidates, especially since the end of World War II – “How many men who “Lost” their first run for “The White House” were able to come back and make a successful second try ?”

There are some candidates. As the years moved toward the 21st Century the ability for a defeated candidate to make a successful second run for “The Oval Office” is now a “long shot.”

Second Try ?

Face it – No one wants to gamble on “A Loser.” If a candidate “Lost” in an election for president, then, supporters are reluctant to rally around for a second run at The White House. The same idea seems to be coming true for gubernatorial races as well.

Elections involve massive effort and advertising is never cheap – tons of money has to be raised to buy print ads, radio ads and television ads.

The Citizens’ Feelings

The people who voted and “Got” their candidates will be feeling good that “Their Vote Counted.”

The people who voted and didn’t get their candidates elected will feel the sense of “Loss” and wonder if they did something wrong or is “The System” broke.

I think “The System” is broke.

It was broke in 2000 and in 2004 and still hasn’t been fixed.

My “Man” got elected. I’m happy.

Democracy is not a perfect process, but, it is the best government system currently in place around the world.

Democrats And Republicans

I had friends back in the United States, who shrug their shoulders and say, “There really is no difference between the Democrats and Republicans.”

My friends are wrong.

I have Texas relatives, who were Democrats and after an election – win or lose, they seemed able to get back to the business of The Real World.

I grew up in Stone County, Missouri – one of the most hardcore, devout Republican counties in the United States of America.

Republicans are NOT Good Losers.

For days and months after an election, Stone County Republicans and many average citizens would whine and complain about those “Damn Democrats !”

United States Seventh District Congressman Dewey Short was born and raised in Galena, Missouri, so it is natural that ,the county seat of Stone County should give Republicans “The Benefit Of The Doubt.”

Since the death of Congressman Short, the national Republican party or the Missouri Republican Party has not went out of their way to “court” Stone County voters in any way, so it is amazing that Stone County remains “a one party system.”

The Importance Of Politics

After an election, many Americans put away their election year memorabilia and will not bother to think about politics until the next leap year presidential election draws near.

Americans forget Politics is a 24-hour a day, 365-day a year business because the decisions that get made in Washington D.C., and the 50 state capitols affect your day to day life and always reach into your wallet.

For a democracy to truly work the citizens really do have to be informed. You do have to pay attention to what the elected officials are up to. You have to look beyond the rhetoric, the propaganda, the bickering to get newspaper headlines and on camera television interviews and decide for yourself what is truth and what is “party propaganda.”

Many Americans get all wrapped up in all kinds of sports and can quote all kinds of sports statistics. But, a game is just a game. Next week, next month or next year there will be another game.

The Super Bowl, The World Series are all big sporting events in the United States, but no quarterback raises your annual property tax and no batter is going to get Americans National Health Care.

If every American in America and overseas would devote one tenth of the energy they normally waste on sports to watching politicians, America would have the most informed, pro-active, action-oriented democracy on the face of the planet. “ – Samuel E. Warren Jr.

Now that the election is over, keep an eye on that councilman, Congressman, Senator, Governor and other elected official.

It will be easy to keep an eye on the president because there is the White House website and legions of international news media that will be watching The Oval Office.

Keep an eye on the daily newspaper headlines and Internet news stories. Watch what the politicians are saying and doing. Now, that President Obama has won re-election he can be devoted to fixing the US Economy.

The senators and congressman that were critical of the president going into the election should all be singing a different song now. Some of those officials have their “own” re-elections to worry about, so they will want to be seen as “helping the president” and not a resistant “stick in the mud” that will try to cause problems.

Party Platforms

The Democrats and the Republicans have their party platforms posted on line for people to read.

Democrats traditionally favor the “working people.” People who really do have to “work” for a living, which means jobs that involve manual labor like farming, construction and the “break a serious sweat” occupations.

Republicans traditionally favor the “wealthy people.” People who may have “earned” their fortunes or the ones that “inherited” their money from their family.

Republicans like to be called the G.O.P., because it sounds “catchy” and Americans love initials and abbreviations. The term GOP stands for “Grand Old Party” and dates back to the time of “The American Civil War.”

However, when I use the term G.O.P., for Republicans, it refers to “Greedy Oil Politicians” and how the GOP always seems more than willing to keep America depend on Middle East Oil.

State Rights

Republicans claim to be “State Rights” oriented, which means states are suppose to decide the majority of issues in their state capitols and the federal government is essentially suppose to stick to providing a military force, printing and coining currency and negotiating foreign treaties.

The theory is that the Federal Government is suppose to be an umbrella and not hardwired into American homes. Yet, after 9/11 the Republican Administration created the Department Of Homeland Security at the federal level to get intrusive when needed.

Centralized Government

Democrats have always favored a centralized federal government. Democrats realize some problems have to be handled at the federal level.

States can issue their driver’s licenses, but, do Americans really want each state to have to issue Passports and Visas ? Imagine 50 different passports and 50 different visas, each with different categories of visas and requirements for the visas.

National Healthcare

American Healthcare has to be done at the National Level. Otherwise, you end up with 50 different plans with different requirements that can change from county to county and parish to parish. Wealthier states can offer more types of coverage than other states.

A woman in Alaska might not need or want “Breast Enhancement Surgery” while in Hollywood that type of cosmetic surgery might be considered crucial, thus, a national policy can address these issues, while states might tend to ignore or “cut” these health services.

Policy Issues

All Americans should realize that, like it or not, “Politics” affects your day to day lives. If you ignore the issues, then, you let the politicians make the rules. They don’t always put things on the ballot to be voted on. Keep an eye on your politicians – make them earn their paychecks.

America has lobby groups that are always out wining and dining the politicians. Some of those lobby groups may not support the same issues that you consider important. Keep your eye on changing issues because if you don’t voice, email, telephone or telegraph your elected officials – the lobbyist wins.

United_States_Capitol_-_west_front_a_resized

Congress Of The United States Of America

I am an American.

I have a birthright to complain.

In numerous articles and political editorials I “beat up” on Congress. They can take it; they are “Big Boys And Girls.” If they have “thin skin”, then, that person needs to find a new job.

I do respect Congress.

Since the 1970s though, I have lost a lot of respect for Congress. Since the 1970s, Congress seems only capable of trying to stop a president from doing something or becoming a “bunch of mindless groupies chasing after a president and granting his every wish”

In the 1970s, Congress did have the “guts” to press the Watergate Hearings and try to get to the bottom of the issue.

Congress did try to nail down “The Iran Contra Affair.”

Congress from 2000 through 2008 acted like “excited school girls chasing after a teen idol and not capable of making their own decisions.” Congress from 2000 through 2008 seemed “A Rubber Stamp For A Republican Administration”

Members of Congress, should be honored to serve the American people. Members of Congress should realize that they to have to answer to the American people – it is called “The Ballot” and gets used every four years/

The United States Supreme Court

Lawyers in black robes. When I was a boy, I respected the United States Supreme Court.

As an adult, I don’t really have any faith and very little respect left for this arm of government.

They are suppose to “Protect, Defend And Translate The Constitution Of The United States Of America.”

From 2000 through 2008, the Supreme Court acted more like Mafia thugs protecting the Godfather, rather than a judicial body that answered to the people.

On the bright side, the majestic building is a beautiful piece of architecture.

Support the President

Now, that President Obama is back at his desk in The Oval Office, I hope that Congress will work with him to rebuild the US Economy.

I doubt the US Supreme Court will do anything to help rebuild the US Economy.

But, if they become “TOO big” an obstacle – President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the Democrat, was accused of “Packing The Court.”

President Obama, the Democrat, is the former Constitutional Law professor . Perhaps, the time has come to “Unpack The Court.”

America is a Democracy.

To keep that Democracy “On The Job,” keep an eye on your elected officials.

Choose one of the parties and get involved.

Sam

Rocket’s Red Gare Over Galena Pride. Politics, Patriots

Rockets’ Red Glare – Over Galena

Pride,

Politics,

Patriots

by Samuel E. Warren Jr.

Galena, Missouri is one of those Norman Rockwell towns that seems best represented by oil paint on canvas.

Galena, Missouri, a small town in the Heartland of America that gets immortalized by a Ralph Waldo Emerson or a Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Galena, Missouri is the kind of small town that has New York City, Boston, Hollywood, teenagers in big city high school English classes smirking, “Yeah, Right, dude. Galena. Missouri – Like some small town like that ever existed Maybe, on Paramount’s back lot or in one of those writer guys’ imaginations.”

Galena, Missouri does exists

The Situation Report

Galena, Missouri is a small town of about 500 people in southwest Missouri. We are 78 miles from Joplin, Missouri, which makes us less than a hundred miles from the famous city in Kansas, named Galena.

There are actually eight towns or cities in the United States of America named Galena.

Galena, Kansas is a famous mining town.

Galena is a precious mineral used in lead and used in making ammunition.

The irony of Galena, Missouri is that an early explorer supposedly saw a mineral in the river that he identified as Galena and thus, Galena, Missouri would be born.

This Galena is a small town, which for decades boasted about being “The Float Fishing Capitol Of The World.” The Bill Rogers Motel on the the shores of the James River would welcome hunters and fishermen from throughout the United States.

Table Rock Dam went operational and people quit coming to Galena to go “float fishing.”

Hidden In The Hills

Most of Galena’s businesses in 2011 are out on the shoulders of the state highway. But, if you turn off the highway and go around the hillside or up the road into the city, you will find Galena. Missouri.

The 1920 Stone County Courthouse on the National Register of Historic Places is the hardest working tourist attraction in America because the building has offices, where work still gets done. The Bank of Galena Museum is the other tourist attraction in town. Outside of the funeral home, bank, medical lab, and the Masonic Lodge – basically, county government moved in to take over the abandoned storefronts of the square. The Baptist Church sits near, but not on the square. The new library is in town, but off the square proper.

Y Bridge Park

Over the railroad tracks, you find the Y Bridge Park, which sits directly across from a private home, which was Dick Lebow’s DX Service Station in 1960.

July 4, 2011 — In the city park, people began stopping by to see what the Galena Park Board was up to. The annual fireworks display is set up on the Y Bridge and people can watch from the park.

Mother Nature’s warm attitude sent people strolling into the snow cone concessions on the park grounds. Some grandparents looked for comfortable places to sit up their lawn chairs or a spot to sit on on the ground, while anxious parents rushed around making last minute preparations.

The dunking booth caused a few youngsters to limber up their arms for a possible future in the St. Louis Cardinals. Some kids smiled to show off their face painted kittens and flags. Meanwhile, parents, especially mothers, rushed about with wide pieces of ribbons and long stemmed flowers.

The long lowboy tractor trailer trailer sit front and center and commanded the center stage spot. Hidden behind patriotic pennants and beneath a humongous American Flag, the presence of keyboards, drums and displayed guitars suggested, “the band isn’t in the house – yet.”

An arched white metal trellis entwined in vines sprouts up on the flatbed trailer and like a fairy godmother, the young master of ceremonies seems to magically appear.

Tiny Tots Time.

Stone County’s smallest citizens make their debutante debut. The little girl’s stroll out on to the portable stage. The emcee asks questions and the youngest girls stare back at all the people in the crowd. Judges make their decisions and trophies are awarded to Stone County’s young future Miss America Contestants. Then, the band steps on stage and entertains with a variety of rock and roll and country and western music.

Meanwhile, Bingo is going on under the rural pavilion with the baby blue telephone poles. While the band plays, a few children dance to the music. Everyone is enjoying the sunshine and waiting for the fireworks. I wander around and take some photos for prosperity and my blog.

Then, I get asked if I want to call out Bingo numbers. Why not ?

The Aquamarine Compote

Back in the mid-1960s on the courthouse lawn, during a Stone County Fair, I and some devoted Bingo players settled in to a long highly polished dining room table to play Bingo, on the east lawn of the courthouse. They probably loved the game.

Me, I had my eye on an aquamarine compote to give my mother. That Bingo game lasted until midnight because I still remember how tired everyone seemed, when the person in charged announced the time and said that was the end of the night’s bingo.

I never did win the compote.

But, the man in charge of that Bingo game allowed me to pay ten dollars to buy the compote. At least, I got the compote for my mom.

Bingo Baby Boomer

This Fourth of July, I was willing to try my talents at calling out the numbers. I do have one of the best of all qualifications – I have a big mouth.

Most of the players seemed to be smiling and winning, so I kept calling out the numbers until the game ended before the fireworks started about nine p.m.

The people in the park seemed in a festive mood as I strolled out of the park to find a location to shoot fireworks photos. The number of people in the park reminded me of my childhood in the 1960s and 1970s: Election Night.

Election Night in the 1960s and 1970s, people would come to Galena for election results.

Give Me That Old Time Politics – Election Run Up

Politics in Stone County and Galena, Missouri in the 1960s was like being Neil Armstrong ready to step on the moon – it was an adventure. The excitement in the air was like taking the enthusiasm for the Academy Awards, the Miss America Pageant, The World Series and The Super Bowl and rolling it into one event called: Election Night.

In the 1960s, Independents were like wood nymphs no one could prove they existed – and no one cared.

In the 1960s, there were Democrats in Stone County, but, they were covert.

Democrats were like CIA agents – everyone suspected them of being Democrats, but know one knew for sure. Unless a Stone County Republican died in office and a Missouri Democrat Governor appointed a Stone County man to serve out the term – you never knew.

In the 1960s, Stone County still celebrated Galena’s favorite son, Dewey Short. The congressman had gotten Galena the Y Bridge and gotten Stone County Table Rock Dam and the United States Navy even named a ship, the U.S.S. Stone County. Thanks to Congressman Short’s popularity, no Republican would dare pass up Galena or Stone County.

Congressman Gene Taylor campaigned at political rallies in Stone County. I listened to State Senator Emory Melton at one of the political rallies. I even attended a political rally and fish fry at Shoals Motel for a Republican challenger to Sheriff Tommy Walker. Most of the aggressive, get out the vote, campaigns of the 1960s were not against Democrats, they were Republicans squaring off to take the county nomination in August for the November election.

Crane, Missouri – 38th Parallel Of Missouri Politics

The Crane Broiler Festival was always an important Political Demilitarized Zone: The 38th Parallel Of Missouri Politics. By the broiler festival in late August, Missouri Republicans had earned their local and county party nominations, showing up at Crane to make speeches always helped to bring hold out hardliners into the fold and to remind the people, who said, “I vote for the person; not the party” – that they weren’t in Kansas in ruby slippers – they were in Stone County, Missouri – where even Jesus Christ was expected to vote Republican!

In more than 50 years of life, I never recall a Democrat or an Independent ever speaking at The Annual Crane Broiler Festival.

Election Night In Stone County In The 1960s

Come Election Night, you knew collectively Stone County voted “A Straight Republican Ticket,”; what you didn’t know was how the rest of America voted?

Election Day people would begin drifting into Galena to wait for “the fireworks.” Once the polls closed, then, information would start to find its way around the square. There was always a carnival atmosphere in town. Galena, Missouri has always been a town that “rolls up the sidewalks after 4 p.m.,” but – election night people would sit on the courthouse lawn, camp out in one of the businesses on the square and wait.

A pickup would be parked on the street in front of the courthouse. In those days, the Stone County Health Center was Gene Hicks Cafe and Pharmacy. You could sit in the cafe and watch someone in the back of the pickup scrawling the changing election numbers on to the two joined and tepid blackboards. Some of the local old timers would camp out on the church style pew benches leaned up against one of the trees.

Everyone always waited for the results of two elections: The President Of The United States Of America and The Sheriff Of Stone County.

All the results were yelled out from the back of the pickup before the figures were scrawled on the board, but usually people only seemed to really care about who got the White House and who gets to be The Sheriff Of Stone County.

Sometimes some people would be concerned about who became The Governor Of Missouri and, in later years, some people seemed interested in who won election as County Clerk or one of the county commissioners – Usually, though, in Stone County – the President and the Sheriff were the Big Dogs that kept people on the edge of their seats.

While the fireworks exploded over head to announce the crescendo to this Fourth of July, I realized America Politics will be no less explosive in the 21st Century. The thunderous roar of the blasts served as a reminder that the political apathy that we tolerate keeps us as spectators on the bleachers in our own political processes.

We have to watch our politicians, listen to their words and watch their actions. We have to hold politicians accountable to maintain freedom. When we shrug off those responsibilities, then, we get less than we deserve. We get whatever is let at the bottom of the barrel.

Freedom should always be celebrated by the explosions and fireworks overhead. The loss of American lives in Iraq and Afghanistan and the current state of America’s economy suggests that we may have shrugged off the political process once too often. We need to get back into the fray. We need to support Americans with vision for freedom and the future.

Generations of aspiring young pitchers and Miss America contestants have the right to expect more from the inherited legacy of their nation. Freedom should always be protected and celebrated, which is, no doubt, the lesson that The Founding Fathers intended to leave enshrined in our hearts.
