Word Press seems to have updated their publish system, since my last editorial, so the format of this editorial may look different than previous posts.

24th Wedding Anniversary

Today, Sunday, July 20, 2014, Christy Warren, my wife, celebrates her 24th Wedding Anniversary. Wait, a minute. . .my wife ? Holy Cow ! That means I’ve been married 24 years today also.

I need a minute.

Okay. The shock has passed.

I am surprised I am celebrating 24 years of marriage. I was a single man. I liked being a single man.
My first marriage was “Made In Hell.” Actually, I made the Supreme Mistake of walking down the alise of the neo-Gothic cathedral of The School Of The Ozarks at Point Lookout, Missouri, back in the late ’70s.

I made it a point to ‘Forget’ that so-called “Wedding Day.”

The Lesson Of My First Marriage was simple: I will Never, Ever get married again. Two-and-a-half miserable years of being “Locked” into “Holy Wedlock”, is the reason Why I Don’t Fear Hell. I spent everyday in Hell for two-and-a-half, long, miserable years. I dreaded sunrise each day.

Once my divorce was granted, I made myself “The Promise.”

The Promise was simple: “Never Again.”

At age 24, I won back my “Freedom.”

I never had any intention of ever getting married again.

I was “Free !” I was single, again.” I had a good job in the United States Air Force. Thanks to Uncle Sam, I do my job, salute smartly and I could travel the world. I did.

Again, I was a Single American. I was fortunately to be a Single American G.I. I loved my job in Public Affairs because I got to live my fantasy as “The Reporter.”

I lived to write. My mentor Master Sergeant took the time to really “Teach” me how to use a camera to take news photographs for the newspaper. I worked at it and became a photojournalist. I wrote the stories and shot the photos, which ended up in print in a base newspaper. My Life was complete. I was Whole. I was Happy.

The day came when Uncle Sam handed me a set of orders for duty in the Pacific. Hallelujah !

The Ozarks country boy ends up at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa. I had heard my father’s stories about World War II in the Pacific. I had heard other veterans War stories about duty in the Pacific. I did some interviews and published some of those stories. When Uncle Sam gave me the orders, I had my camera bag packed before my duffel bag and I was ready to catch the aircraft on the runway.

While stationed on Okinawa, I noticed and met some of the Most Beautiful Women On Planet Earth.

I met Koreans and Filipinas. I got a temporary duty assignment to the Kingdom Of Thailand, so I met beautiful Thais, Cambodian and Laotian women.

I was in my 20s and 30s, so I was as “Handsome” as I was ever going to be. Fortunately, the striking blue uniform and my Battle Dress Uniform made even an average looking guy like me appear like a handsome Hollywood heart throb.

Still, I had “No Intention Of Never, Ever Getting Married Again.”
At Clark Air Base, Republic of the Philippines, I fell in love with the tropical climate, the country, the base, and my job. I was a Single American G.I., whose blood flowed and his heart pounded, so I naturally noticed I was “Ground Zero” in the Pacific version of Heaven. Everywhere I looked — Filipinas.

A Single Man In Paradise surrounded by beautiful women realizes Life is more fun and meaningful when it is shared.

One Filipina caught my eye. Christy had a Farah Fawcett-Majors shag haircut. Her eyes sparkled. Her smile was diamond bright sunshine.

She wasn’t tall. Still, she caught my eye and I could see her as a “Playboy” or “Penthouse” centerfold in my mind.

Christy might have known two words in English. Language was definitely the barrier. I learned broken Tagalog and she busted through the barrier and learned English quickly.

One of the things I noticed about my future wife was her independence and sense of style. In the Asian culture, women usually are shy and taught to stay in the background. Christy was one of the few Asian women I had ever met, who did not do the cultural “Docile Routine.”

When it came to style, Christy had the eye of a fashion designer. She knew how to mix and match colors that caught my eye and made other men turn their heads.

We began to date. I suddenly realized, “Jackpot !”

I knew “If” I didn’t marry Christy I would always regret the decision. I wanted someone I could “Love” and share my Life with.

Women came and Women went. I was a single man. I knew, Christy was “The Woman!” I didn’t want to see her, “Go.”

I proposed.

She made me wait.

I kept at the job and wondered “If” she would take me up on my offer.

She did.

Friday, July 20, Nineteen Eighty Nine, the presses rolled. “The Philippine Flyer” came “Hot Off The Press !”

In the best tradition of American Newspaper Editors And Reporters, I had told Christy, “The newspaper comes first !”

My Wedding Day was scheduled to happen — after “The Philippine Flyer” came off the presses. Show Time was 10 a.m., at the Justice Of The Peace office at The Main Gate of Clark Air Base. I and everyone of my witnesses and people from my office were in position.

The only thing missing ? The Bride.

Christy was having “Second Thoughts.”

The clock ticks. Time passes.

I smiled a lot.

The smiles helped to hide my nervousness.
I remembered the stories about being “Left At The Altar.” I remembered Dustin Hoffman in the movie, “The Graduate.”

The witnesses were getting restless. The Justice Of The Peace did some more paperwork to pass the time.

I got restless.

At 1 p.m., my “Bride” walked through the door. Heaven retired an “Archangel” that day. Christy was a heavenly vision. She wore a simple white dress with the traditional Filipina “Imelda Marcos Filipina sleeves”, which rise an inch or two at the shoulder seam.

Filipina First Lady Imelda Marcos made the dress style internationally famous, so, at least, Military Americans got in the habit of describing the dress as “The Imelda Dress” or a Filipino dress with “Imelda sleeves.”

Christy wore her long hair up to create a bun at the back described as Chinese style. I describe her holding mechanism as “Chopsticks”, for lack of a better descriptive term.

Christy was “Perfect.”

24 Years Later — My Bride, Christy is still “Perfect.”

The only thing my bride lacked was “Wings.” I looked at her and my mind’s eye supplied the feathery, ivory angelic wings to match her dress.

“I do.” The two most important words I ever uttered in my life, I spoke that day.

When I die, I doubt I go to Heaven. I don’t care. I’m a redneck Texan. I grew up in the Hillbilly Ozarks. I am an arrogant American. I love my country and my flag.

The Texan Warrens and The Missouri Ozarks’ DeLongs taught me the most important thing in Life is to Live It and Love Your Family.

The Day I Step Out Of This Life and stand before God or Satan and am expected to make a statement about my life, I already know, what I will say:

“Sir, with all due respect, I enjoyed every second of my Life. I had the Best Mother any Son or Daughter could ever ask for.”

” I am grateful for my father. I hit the celestial jackpot of aunts and uncles when it came to DeLongs and Warrens. The Universe hit me hard at times in Life.”

“I am not a religious man. However, I got The Best Wife that any man, in the past, present or future, could ever imagine or ask for. Christy Saldana Warren might not have been an archangel, but, she has always been, My Goddess. My wife has always been my strength, my heart and my soul.”

“If this is Judgement Day; so be it ! I ain’t askin’ for ‘Squat.’ I just want The Universe, Yahweh, Jehovah, Allah, The Christian God and whatever other deities, real or imagined, which live in The Universe to realize I loved Christy Warren with my heart and blackened soul. I thank The Universe for my son, Samuel Ranilo Warren. I thank The Universe for my daughter, Donna Junea Warren.”

“My children have ‘The Best’ of their beautiful Filipina mother. I truly hope, my children have inherited some of the redneck arrogance, cynicism, skepticism, independence, stubbornness, and courage of their American Warren and DeLong ancestors and their ‘Hell-raising’ father, so they will achieve their own personal greatness in their lives.”

“Therefore, God, Satan, with all due respect,my Life is better than I could of ever hoped for. Faith, Hope, Beauty, Joy, Happiness — I had it all.”

“If you gentlemen dieties wanted me to suffer — you messed up ! I found ‘My Wife.’ I found ‘My Life.’ Christy Saldana Warren. I lived on the planet Earth. But, I Never really Lived until I woke up each morning and looked into Christy’s face.”

“My world. My Life. My Soul. I lived as a man. My wife completed me. No silly reward or No eternal punishment can ever separate my from The Love Of My Wife Christy On Earth.”

“Send Me To Heaven ! Send Me To Hell ! Cast My Atoms To The Far Reaches Of The Universe ! I will have the last smile. I had ‘The Best Mother Of Mankind.’ No Eternal Punishment Will Ever Torture My Sinner’s Soul because I had ‘The Best Wife Of Mankind’ — Christy Saldana Warren.”

In the United States, it is never easy to find the Love of another person.

In the Republic Of The Philippines, Love might be totally ignored because people are taught to believe in a God creature or his underling, rather than open their eyes and search for the soul that adds to or completes their Life.

My Life has taught me that Love is The Soul Who Completes You.

Christy has not always agreed with me. Christy, at times, has definitely disagreed with me. We have had our loud shouting matches at each other. However, I would never want to imagine My Life Without Her.

Thus, God or Satan — real or not — does not worry me. None of the deities of Mankind frighten me. Yahweh, Jehovah, Allah, The Christian God can all take a bus to Brooklyn and drown themselves in The Atlantic Ocean. I do not “NEED” or “WANT” any of the silly religious fantasies and mythologies of The World’s Old Tired Organized Religions.

I stood at “Ground Zero”, the day that Super Typhoon Yolanda, came to my barangay in the Philippines. I heard the winds howl. I saw the intense white light around the door frame. The door busts open three times. Three times I rushed put my shoulder to the door and closed it.

None of the phony Gods Of Mankind had ‘The Power’ to take me.

I love my wife and family. The phony Gods didn’t get me and they had their chance.

Super Typhoon Yolanda didn’t take me and I gave her three chances when I grabbed the door and shut it.

Thus, “If” I ever do stand before one of the false Gods Of Mankind or Satan, I will be respectful: I was born a Texan and “Respect” is ingrained in my DNA.

I will not “Fear” because I was raised in the Ozarks by a proud “hillbilly” mother, who taught me “Love IS Family” and “Family IS Always Love.” Relatives who betray you; aren’t family — they are just biological lifeforms who have a lot of the shared RNA and DNA.

Marriage can and does “Create A Special Mystical Strand Of RNA and DNA”, which flows through the blood and enhances the organs to evolve a human into a special, unique human, who lives for his or her family.

In the final analysis, I have, no doubt, I could look God or Satan in the eyes and present my final statements.

“My wife,Christy made me welcome each sunrise. Everyday with Christy was an adventure. We had our ups. We had our downs. We always had ‘The Love.’ Christy gave me two beautiful children, Samuel Ranilo Warren and Donna Junea Warren. The Universe knows ‘My Goddess’ is Christy Warren — my heart, my soul, and my Life.”

Thank You, Christy for 24 Wonderful Years Of Married Life. Thank You, Christy for 24 Years Of Life. Christy, You are “My Goddess.”

I love you, Christy.

Treasure the Damon and Pythias’

Relationships Of Your Life

Honor

The

Friend

HOUR GLASS 2005-03-25_00004_resized

by Samuel E. Warren Jr.

Iremember friends.

In life, you, my reader, will remember friends.

Friends are the unique people, who add spice and meaning to your life. The ultimate concept of a “Friend” is the classic story of Damon and Pythias.

Phythias stood ready to “give” his life for his friend. Damon returned and the devotion of loyalty, fidelity and friendship, so impressed the king that the issue was settled and the king allowed both men to enjoy the “freedom” of their lives.

In Life, there are different levels of friendship. In my life, I have had friends my own age, friends who were younger than I and friends who were older.

The older friends were sometimes employers, supervisors or bosses who I respected for their integrity and credibility.

A friend is someone that you can rely on and they can rely on you.

Fools Fair Weather Friends

Fair Weather Friends” are the fools in Life, you meet, who show up to party with you. If you are paying for the food, buying the drinks and are in a position to pay the tab or the bill, then, you will find you have “scores of friends, followers, groupies, and companions ready to be your buddy.”

Of course, when your wallet is empty, they will slip into the shadows.

The first time Life puts a crisis in your path, the “Fair Weather Friends” will have lost, misplaced their cell phones and changed their cell phone numbers.

After all, they are already “too busy” leeching, bumming and being a parasite to another person, who is celebrating a great moment of Life.

A Fair Weather Friend is always a “prostitution” of the word, “Friend.”

Fools are The Fair Weather Friends that are pathetic people, who are simply the cancerous bacteria of Life. The minor role of any Fair Weather Friend in your Life is to clarify the true meaning of the word, “Friend.”

Friends, true friends, do not leave you in time of trouble. They help to the point they can and will still be there once the trouble passes.

A friend may not always be able to go shoulder-to-shoulder with you to “combat” the trouble head-on, but, usually they will be in a position to provide advice, guidance and counsel that will help you.

A friend always maintains their integrity, credibility and devotion to you. An acquaintance or an associate is a “temporary friend”, who will exit out the side or back door anytime the “heat” of a Life situation starts to rise.

The trick in Life, is the ability to look at and think about people and decide where they stand in your Life. Realize, we all have relationships in Life. Everyday our Life changes and the lives of our friends also change.

Relatives, spouses, Life events and the natural progression of “Time” can change your relationship with a friend. You loose contact with the friend.

Remember A Friend Always

The important fact is you never loose the memory of a “Friend.” Years later, when you are faced with a serious life situation you will remember the “Friend” of that event and you will know how to approach the situation for a successful result.

Years later, you will be able to reflect and remember a “Friend” or “A Roster Of Friends” who have added meaning, enjoyment, happiness, joy, laughter, and depth that changed the shadow of your Life into the pyramid that will stand the test of the ages in the Real World.

The Ancients”

The Ancients”, those early, superstitious humans that inhabited planet earth and eeked out an existence in stubborn soil, under moody skies and facing angry seas, where smarter than we, modern humans, give them credit for.

The ancients took note of their lives and the world around them and left behind stories, sculptures, paintings, drawings, sketches and other items that would be documented by scholars and uncovered by archaeologists.

Their pagan gods and goddesses inspired their simple imaginations and gave their dubious lives meaning in a world that was alive at a level far beyond their simplistic interpretation of life.

Their understanding and attempts to solve the curiosity of their lives allows us to pass on those lessons as stories, TV shows and movies to inform and entertain ourselves and future generations.

The Story Of Human Nature”

The true genius of their daily lives is “The Story Of Human Nature” survives every generation for the next.

Emotions The River Of Life

The emotions of human nature is still the same basic water that has always flowed in “The River Of Life.” A friend, who stands on the shore, may have worn her Roman tunic and carried her shield and worn her sword. You might have called her, “Isis, Diana, Fortuna, Juno, Athena, or, Hera”

In the 21st Century, a friend may stand on the shore of The River Of Life in a bikini,a business skirt, a uniform, a simple dress and, one would hope, the gender appropriate attire, unless of course; it is Halloween, the holiday, which tosses out all rules of dress for a comfortable costume.

A friend is a friend, regardless of the time period of history. Emotion is the key that always unlocks the feelings that identifies a “Friend.”

Time and the events of Life will age you and your Friend. Fate and distance will demand circumstances that will keep you from a Friend.

Your mind will never delete, corrupt or misplace the memory of a Friend. Because in Life, whether it is two weeks later or thirty years later, when you notice a man on the street or a woman in a cafe; your mind will quickly identify your Friend.

Associates, affiliates, acquaintances, groupies, fans, and Fair Weather Friends are the respective props and holiday banners of our lives that end up in the dumpster of our daily memories and activities.

The Immortality Of Friendship

A Friend is a person, who can step through the mists of Time and step back into your Life and the “friendship” resumes as though only a few minutes might have past.

Children, spouses, jobs, travel and all the events of Life, will have changed you and your Friend, but, the immortal genetics of Friendship never change.

The truth of the Damon and Pythias story is the voyages, crisis and disasters of Life will always challenge you, but, Friendship is a value engineered into your immortal soul and no force on earth can destroy a Friendship.

People can decide to end a Friendship;but, no force in the Universe can destroy a Friendship.

Usually in The Real World some of the best stories of Friendship are found in the annuals of War. War is the entity that rattles Time and consumes lives. The human struggle for survival creates and solidifies Friendship quickly.

Peace time relationships that evolve into Friendship usually require more time and day to day interaction to allow the Friendship to grow into maturity.

Fabulous Feast For A Friend

A true friend is always a “Friend.” A Friend lasts a lifetime.

In The Real World, Viking feasts should be held in great oak halls. Huge torches should burn away the evening hours.

Valkyries from Valhalla should descend and slide a chair up to the feast table to celebrate the glorious banquet held in the “Honor Of The Friend.”

Waves of music should rush through the caverns of the great hall. Wings of aroma of mutton, pork and sides of beef should tickle the noses and salivate the tongues of guests.

Joy and laughter should thunder off the walls under the bright campaign streamers of your Life that decorate the great hall. Platters of vegetables should glow like ripe jewels and the sweetness of fruit should blanket the senses.

Your Coat Of Arms and your Friend’s Coat Of Arms should be side-by-side as “The Great Shields” and be the centerpiece of the evening hung in the command position on the great rafter over the head table.

You and your friend should sit under The Great Shields, feasting, toasting, and laughing. Your karaoke voices should sweep through the hall to announce your deeds to the assembled guests. Great animal skins, symbols of your great hunts should line the hall for your guest to sit on.

On either side of The Great Shields are the other Coats Of Arms, campaign streamers and prestigious sheepskins that document the voyages and battles of your life.

Of course, the evening would be devoted to feasting and storytelling. You and your friend while away the hours with the tales of your triumphs, tragedies, successes, failures, and the stories of your lives.

Honor Your Friend

Of course, in The Real World, no one goes out of their way to find or rent you a Great Hall for a banquet feast for a friendship reunion. However, your mind and your imagination can make the necessary arrangements and host the monumental occasion. After all, a true Friend is always a Friend for Life.

Honor yourself; Honor your Friend.

Go ahead, pick up the cell phone or log on the Internet and try to find a Friend of your past.

A New Year is always a wonderful time to try and “check in” with an important person in your past that you call,”Friend.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AMERICA ! FOURTH OF JULY 2012 !

Happy Birthday, America !

Fourth Of July 2012 !

Joe Boyer of Nixa, Missouri, rides the horse and proudly displays the American flag, during the Stone County, Missouri 150th Anniversary Parade, in Galena, Missouri. Samuel E. Warren Jr., I shot this photo. It is one of my favorite, “What It Means To Be An American Photos.” The smile on Mr. Boyer’s face shows his pride and confidence, which is the birthright of every American.
The cowboy hat is symbolic of the American West and The Lone Star State – Texas. Stephen F. Austin, a Missouri boy, who went to Texas and did alright for himself – he ended up with the Capitol Of The Lone Star State named after him – Austin, Texas.
And, Texas is a living symbol of Independence – because when Americans were reluctant to go up against Mexico – General Samuel Houston, and the Texicans went it “alone” to do what had to be done for “Independence.”
Mr. Boyer’s western attire reminds Americans that “In The Beginning” in America it was the farmers and the cowboys, who took up their pitchforks and their muskets to answer the call of “Freedom, Justice, Liberty and Independence” against an old British King, who demanded “economic slavery of his subjects.”
From the “Minutemen” to Modern Day Americans, farm boys, farm girls, cowboys, cowgirls, they always “saddle up” and “ride for freedom” joined by the city boys and city girls, who always answer the call to Freedom, regardless, if the battlefield is at their front door as in the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War to the foreign shores of World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan and any crisis in between where Freedom, Justice and Liberty is at stake.
The flag Mr. Boyer carries is a Public Global Ultimatum to the dictators and terrorists of the World that proclaims – “Bring It On, Scumbags ! Freedom, Justice, Liberty, and Independence Are The Chromosomes Of American DNA.”

(Leyte, Republic of the Philippines) – Today, is the Fourth of July 2012.

In the Philippines, it is just another summer day.

In the United States of America, it is actually only July 3, 2012.

Thanks to the mythic International Date Line that exists out in the Pacific Ocean, the calendars and clocks of the Philippines are actually 12 hours ahead of the Good Ole’ USA. And, if you live in one of the US States that plays “The Daylight Savings Game”, then, the Philippines is actually 13 hours ahead.

Young, single Americans, who are International Date Line Scholars or Time and Space Continuum Scholars, if you are aboard a vessel sailing along the International Date Line, then, you realize at sunrise today, you could of began your on board “Fourth Of July Independence Day Party,” which lasts until midnight. Then, you simply stroll a couple of steps across the deck to the other side of the ship, which would be on “that side of the International Date Line, which means it is now the Fourth of July in the United States” and keep your party going until midnight. Thus, your 24-hour “Fourth of July Independence Day Party” is now, “officially” a 48-hour “Fourth of July Independence Day Party.” Who is it that says, “There are not enough hours in the day to get things done ?”

The 48-Hour Day – Welcome To The International Date Line – Of course, The International Date Line is somewhere out in the Pacific Ocean. The Zodiac Alarm Clocks were set up on a table for a photo shoot in Galena, Missouri. One nice thing about the International Date Line perspective is it gives you 48 hours to celebrate “America’s Independence Day” by observing the time difference on both sides of the line. If you get sea sick, you might want to consider having your celebration on dry land. The time factor is a great idea to celebrate a “Long Independence Day”, it also comes in handy when you decide to celebrate your “Happy Birthday.” Ladies, if you hesitate about the “Big 3-Oh Birthday,” then, you might want the “Big 2-9 Birthday” to last a little longer. “America’s Day” “officially” begins in the island of Guam in the Pacific closer to the International Date Line than the mainland United States, thus, trivia buffs take note that before the first rays of sunshine bask Washington D.C., Guamanians and Americans are already on the beaches of Guam under the palm trees. Photo by Samuel E. Warren Jr.

A 48-hour day can come in handy. Of course, you probably still want to schedule a “catnap” somewhere along the way.

After more than 200 years of Democracy, some Americans have forgotten the reason that we celebrate the day. Thus, let me refresh your memory with a quick history lesson.

There was an old arrogant, sit on his jowls, British King, who in order to live his life of ease and splendor, needed the colonists of America to work their fingers to the bone and their lives to an early grave, so he could sit on his jowls and enjoy “HIS” life. While the colonists struggled to survive in a strange new land trying to raise crops and kids, the British King sits on his jowls enjoy the fruits of court – “Wine, Women and Song.”

Meanwhile, American colonists struggle against weather and disease in their strange new homeland praying that the crops will grow to feed their families. The British King sits on his jowls and does not care. He only cares that the American colonists pay their “tribute” in the form of “taxes”, so he can continue to sit on his jowls and enjoy his life of ease – “Wine, Women and Song” at court.

Of course, Wine and Women costs money and even singers expect to get paid, thus the old British King, who sits on his jowls, must raise taxes because prices always rise. Thus, it is time to “Tax The Tea Without Representation.” The British Citizens, i.e., the American Colonists finally realized that the British King sits on his jowls enjoying “The Good Life Of Court” – “Wine, Women and Song” while they work like oxen to raise crops to pay his taxes.

Enough. One day the British Citizens had had enough – that day they became American colonists.

They picked up their pitchforks, axes, garden hoes, muskets, cap and ball flintlock pistols and decided it was time for a new way of life and a new government. That day, they decided to tell the British King, who sits on his jowls – “Stick It Where The Sun Don’t Shine !”

The American Revolutionary War began.

When the smoke had cleared the colonists – were now Americans.

The British King, who sat on his jowls. Still sat on his jowls. But, the Americans no longer “paid” him to sit on his jowls and enjoy the good life of court of wine, women and song.

The American colonists had beaten the odds. They stood up for what they believed in.

The American Colonists Convictions brought forth a new nation.

A nation that decided they did not need a King to sit on his jowls and enjoy the good life of court of wine, women and song.

America is born. Americans realize Freedom and Justice give life meaning.

Thus, Independence Day served noticed to the kings, queens, monarchs and dictators of the world.

When the day comes that Citizens rise up for Independence, Freedom and Justice – it is always a Day Of National Celebration that should be celebrated, honored, remembered and celebrated each and every year there after until the end of time.

Unfurl that flag – display that flag proudly – the message is immortal and eternal – “Freedom, Justice, Dignity Is The Universal Blessing And Right Of All Humans”

God Bless The United States Of America !

God Bless The Men And Women Who Have Died Defending The United States Of America !

God Bless The Men And Women Of The United States Armed Forces, who defend the human rights of Liberty, Freedom, Justice, Independence, And The Pursuit Of Happiness !

God Bless The Men And Women Of The United States Of America’s Armed Forces ! Through the ages, American Men and Women in Uniform have always answered Freedom’s call. In peacetime, “The Eagles Of Liberty” soar through the skies. In War, Americans “go down singing and swinging” that the universal birthrights of Freedom, Justice, Liberty and Independence do not perish for humanity. Photo by Samuel E. Warren Jr.

God Bless The Citizens Of The World, who seek an Independence Day !

The American Flag Waves Over The South Lawn Of The Stone County, Missouri Courthouse, July 4, 2011.

Happy Birthday, America !

On the Fourth of July, fire up that barbeque for the hot dogs, hamburgers and steaks. Turn up the stereo, put on the Lee Greenwood, “Proud To Be An American” Break out those Bic and Zippo cigarette lighters and “flick them for Freedom.”

Party, America ! Party Down America !

Have an ice cold Lone Star beer or Miller High Life for me. Time to celebrate, Freedom, Justice, Liberty and Independence! July 5, when the sun rises again, of course, the duties of “The Defenders Of Liberty” continue and the American flag promises “Americans are always ready ‘to go down singing and swinging’ that Freedom, Justice, Liberty and Independence are universal rights that will not perish for humanity!”

Rockets’ Red Glare – Over Galena

Pride,

Politics,

Patriots

by Samuel E. Warren Jr.

Galena, Missouri is one of those Norman Rockwell towns that seems best represented by oil paint on canvas.

Galena, Missouri, a small town in the Heartland of America that gets immortalized by a Ralph Waldo Emerson or a Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Galena, Missouri is the kind of small town that has New York City, Boston, Hollywood, teenagers in big city high school English classes smirking, “Yeah, Right, dude. Galena. Missouri – Like some small town like that ever existed Maybe, on Paramount’s back lot or in one of those writer guys’ imaginations.”

Galena, Missouri does exists

The Situation Report

Galena, Missouri is a small town of about 500 people in southwest Missouri. We are 78 miles from Joplin, Missouri, which makes us less than a hundred miles from the famous city in Kansas, named Galena.

There are actually eight towns or cities in the United States of America named Galena.

Galena, Kansas is a famous mining town.

Galena is a precious mineral used in lead and used in making ammunition.

The irony of Galena, Missouri is that an early explorer supposedly saw a mineral in the river that he identified as Galena and thus, Galena, Missouri would be born.

This Galena is a small town, which for decades boasted about being “The Float Fishing Capitol Of The World.” The Bill Rogers Motel on the the shores of the James River would welcome hunters and fishermen from throughout the United States.

Table Rock Dam went operational and people quit coming to Galena to go “float fishing.”

Hidden In The Hills

Most of Galena’s businesses in 2011 are out on the shoulders of the state highway. But, if you turn off the highway and go around the hillside or up the road into the city, you will find Galena. Missouri.

The 1920 Stone County Courthouse on the National Register of Historic Places is the hardest working tourist attraction in America because the building has offices, where work still gets done. The Bank of Galena Museum is the other tourist attraction in town. Outside of the funeral home, bank, medical lab, and the Masonic Lodge – basically, county government moved in to take over the abandoned storefronts of the square. The Baptist Church sits near, but not on the square. The new library is in town, but off the square proper.

Y Bridge Park

Over the railroad tracks, you find the Y Bridge Park, which sits directly across from a private home, which was Dick Lebow’s DX Service Station in 1960.

July 4, 2011 — In the city park, people began stopping by to see what the Galena Park Board was up to. The annual fireworks display is set up on the Y Bridge and people can watch from the park.

Mother Nature’s warm attitude sent people strolling into the snow cone concessions on the park grounds. Some grandparents looked for comfortable places to sit up their lawn chairs or a spot to sit on on the ground, while anxious parents rushed around making last minute preparations.

The dunking booth caused a few youngsters to limber up their arms for a possible future in the St. Louis Cardinals. Some kids smiled to show off their face painted kittens and flags. Meanwhile, parents, especially mothers, rushed about with wide pieces of ribbons and long stemmed flowers.

The long lowboy tractor trailer trailer sit front and center and commanded the center stage spot. Hidden behind patriotic pennants and beneath a humongous American Flag, the presence of keyboards, drums and displayed guitars suggested, “the band isn’t in the house – yet.”

An arched white metal trellis entwined in vines sprouts up on the flatbed trailer and like a fairy godmother, the young master of ceremonies seems to magically appear.

Tiny Tots Time.

Stone County’s smallest citizens make their debutante debut. The little girl’s stroll out on to the portable stage. The emcee asks questions and the youngest girls stare back at all the people in the crowd. Judges make their decisions and trophies are awarded to Stone County’s young future Miss America Contestants. Then, the band steps on stage and entertains with a variety of rock and roll and country and western music.

Meanwhile, Bingo is going on under the rural pavilion with the baby blue telephone poles. While the band plays, a few children dance to the music. Everyone is enjoying the sunshine and waiting for the fireworks. I wander around and take some photos for prosperity and my blog.

Then, I get asked if I want to call out Bingo numbers. Why not ?

The Aquamarine Compote

Back in the mid-1960s on the courthouse lawn, during a Stone County Fair, I and some devoted Bingo players settled in to a long highly polished dining room table to play Bingo, on the east lawn of the courthouse. They probably loved the game.

Me, I had my eye on an aquamarine compote to give my mother. That Bingo game lasted until midnight because I still remember how tired everyone seemed, when the person in charged announced the time and said that was the end of the night’s bingo.

I never did win the compote.

But, the man in charge of that Bingo game allowed me to pay ten dollars to buy the compote. At least, I got the compote for my mom.

Bingo Baby Boomer

This Fourth of July, I was willing to try my talents at calling out the numbers. I do have one of the best of all qualifications – I have a big mouth.

Most of the players seemed to be smiling and winning, so I kept calling out the numbers until the game ended before the fireworks started about nine p.m.

The people in the park seemed in a festive mood as I strolled out of the park to find a location to shoot fireworks photos. The number of people in the park reminded me of my childhood in the 1960s and 1970s: Election Night.

Election Night in the 1960s and 1970s, people would come to Galena for election results.

Give Me That Old Time Politics – Election Run Up

Politics in Stone County and Galena, Missouri in the 1960s was like being Neil Armstrong ready to step on the moon – it was an adventure. The excitement in the air was like taking the enthusiasm for the Academy Awards, the Miss America Pageant, The World Series and The Super Bowl and rolling it into one event called: Election Night.

In the 1960s, Independents were like wood nymphs no one could prove they existed – and no one cared.

In the 1960s, there were Democrats in Stone County, but, they were covert.

Democrats were like CIA agents – everyone suspected them of being Democrats, but know one knew for sure. Unless a Stone County Republican died in office and a Missouri Democrat Governor appointed a Stone County man to serve out the term – you never knew.

In the 1960s, Stone County still celebrated Galena’s favorite son, Dewey Short. The congressman had gotten Galena the Y Bridge and gotten Stone County Table Rock Dam and the United States Navy even named a ship, the U.S.S. Stone County. Thanks to Congressman Short’s popularity, no Republican would dare pass up Galena or Stone County.

Congressman Gene Taylor campaigned at political rallies in Stone County. I listened to State Senator Emory Melton at one of the political rallies. I even attended a political rally and fish fry at Shoals Motel for a Republican challenger to Sheriff Tommy Walker. Most of the aggressive, get out the vote, campaigns of the 1960s were not against Democrats, they were Republicans squaring off to take the county nomination in August for the November election.

Crane, Missouri – 38th Parallel Of Missouri Politics

The Crane Broiler Festival was always an important Political Demilitarized Zone: The 38th Parallel Of Missouri Politics. By the broiler festival in late August, Missouri Republicans had earned their local and county party nominations, showing up at Crane to make speeches always helped to bring hold out hardliners into the fold and to remind the people, who said, “I vote for the person; not the party” – that they weren’t in Kansas in ruby slippers – they were in Stone County, Missouri – where even Jesus Christ was expected to vote Republican!

In more than 50 years of life, I never recall a Democrat or an Independent ever speaking at The Annual Crane Broiler Festival.

Election Night In Stone County In The 1960s

Come Election Night, you knew collectively Stone County voted “A Straight Republican Ticket,”; what you didn’t know was how the rest of America voted?

Election Day people would begin drifting into Galena to wait for “the fireworks.” Once the polls closed, then, information would start to find its way around the square. There was always a carnival atmosphere in town. Galena, Missouri has always been a town that “rolls up the sidewalks after 4 p.m.,” but – election night people would sit on the courthouse lawn, camp out in one of the businesses on the square and wait.

A pickup would be parked on the street in front of the courthouse. In those days, the Stone County Health Center was Gene Hicks Cafe and Pharmacy. You could sit in the cafe and watch someone in the back of the pickup scrawling the changing election numbers on to the two joined and tepid blackboards. Some of the local old timers would camp out on the church style pew benches leaned up against one of the trees.

Everyone always waited for the results of two elections: The President Of The United States Of America and The Sheriff Of Stone County.

All the results were yelled out from the back of the pickup before the figures were scrawled on the board, but usually people only seemed to really care about who got the White House and who gets to be The Sheriff Of Stone County.

Sometimes some people would be concerned about who became The Governor Of Missouri and, in later years, some people seemed interested in who won election as County Clerk or one of the county commissioners – Usually, though, in Stone County – the President and the Sheriff were the Big Dogs that kept people on the edge of their seats.

While the fireworks exploded over head to announce the crescendo to this Fourth of July, I realized America Politics will be no less explosive in the 21st Century. The thunderous roar of the blasts served as a reminder that the political apathy that we tolerate keeps us as spectators on the bleachers in our own political processes.

We have to watch our politicians, listen to their words and watch their actions. We have to hold politicians accountable to maintain freedom. When we shrug off those responsibilities, then, we get less than we deserve. We get whatever is let at the bottom of the barrel.

Freedom should always be celebrated by the explosions and fireworks overhead. The loss of American lives in Iraq and Afghanistan and the current state of America’s economy suggests that we may have shrugged off the political process once too often. We need to get back into the fray. We need to support Americans with vision for freedom and the future.

Generations of aspiring young pitchers and Miss America contestants have the right to expect more from the inherited legacy of their nation. Freedom should always be protected and celebrated, which is, no doubt, the lesson that The Founding Fathers intended to leave enshrined in our hearts.
