The Worser of Two Evils

The Election of 2012

by Samuel E. Warren Jr.

Goodbye, President Obama !

Mitt Romney has the nomination for the Republican Candidate for President of the United States of America.

Big Whoop !

President Obama does not deserve to win re-election. Mitt Romney is just another in a long list of rich Republicans, who seeks to warm the seat in The Oval Office.

Neither Obama or Romney deserves to be:

“The President Of The United States Of America.”

Talking Suits

President Obama and Mr. Romney are, “Talking Suits” – the 21st Century Version of Max Head Room Becomes President – a character gets some phrases to spit out of The Boob Tube and voters fall for it – Welcome to American Presidential Elections from 1964 through 2011.

President Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton all came to “The Oval Office” with a plan, which was obvious from Day One. The rest of the so-called presidents from 1964 on have been “winging it – on a broken wing.” Those presidents relied on their party to get them elected and the party came through.

Popularity Contest

In 1960, the Campaign for President of the United States Of America became a “Popularity Contest.” Political strategists knew the handsome United States Navy PT Boat Commander would win the hearts of women voters and men would want to be the handsome young Democrat, who turned ladies heads and had the strong family and the proud military tradition behind him.

It is highly unlikely without the Death of President Kennedy, that Lyndon Baines Johnson could come any closer to The White House than to be on a tour. LBJ was a tall, grandfather type man, whose presidential speeches are best used when you are out of sleeping pills and need a good night’s sleep.

Puppet People Presidents

The Popularity Contest strategy really hasn’t worked well since 1960, but, when the majority of candidates are “paper doll” characters with lackluster backgrounds and bureaucratic administrative skills, then, voters have to go with the “best guess” theory, which always leaves America with puppets, rather than presidents.

It is time for both parties to once again start looking for “Leaders” and not “Puppet People Presidents”

Alas, The Presidential Campaign of 2012 seems to be another “Ho-Hum, Dumb-Dumb Personality Contest.”

The Worser Of Two Evils American Presidential

Campaign 1972 and 2012

But, 2012 is really “The Presidential Campaign Of 1972 – Again – Press Play.”

“Welcome To The American Presidential “Worser Of Two Evils” Campaign.”

In 1972, the only real issue was the Vietnam War. The American people wanted it ended.

In 2012, the only real issue is the US and Global Economy. The American people want their Dollar to once again have value and be able to put groceries on the table, pay the gas, electric, heating bills and provide a retirement income.

War Election Campaigns

Wars are popular and easy campaign issues, the candidate unfurls an American flag, has his speech writers dash off some “wave the flag” patriotic speeches. The candidate does some photo ops with American military veterans and poses for pictures with active duty troops.

Come Election Day, Americans’ “Red, White and Blue Adrenalin” kicks in and they rush to the polls and cast their ballots for that “baseball playin’, apple pie eatin’, I love my Mother, drive a Chevrolet and “support our troops” candidate.

Of course, once the candidate is sworn in and on the job, American veterans and active duty military people are once again dumped into the political toy box, next to “the plastic green army men of yesteryear” to wait for another four years.

In 1972, Americans wanted a leader. One of the popular slogans of that election was “This is no election. We have to choose between the worser of two evils: Republicans or Democrats.”

The American people had lost faith in their so-called leaders and didn’t believe either party could end the War. The people were right.

“Vietnamization” was not and end to the War; it was an “auto-pilot” function that allowed “Tricky Dick” Nixon to do his own thing while the War ended by reducing the amount of money being sent to Vietnam and “orders” were cut to send US troops back home.

There was no “Exit” strategy to Vietnam and the only “Mission Accomplished” was to get “Tricky Dick” in the White House.

In 2012, Americans again want “a leader.”

America does not need another Party Puppet President ; America needs a Leader.

Neither party is up to the challenge.

Republican Presidential Solutions:

ALWAYS Taxes and War

American Republican Presidents have only two answers for any crisis that faced America in the 20th and early 21st Century. Taxes and War. Look at US History since the end of World War II – Republicans raise taxes or go to War. George H. W. Bush hit the lottery – he did both: he raised taxes and did the Kuwait thing.

In 1972, the Republicans outsmarted the Democrats the GOP pointed the finger at the Democrat and shouted, “Dove.” Americans freaked because they thought the Democrats would “surrender America” to end the War. “Tricky Dick” Nixon, of course, won by a landslide.

Bad President

In 2012, Republicans are ready to win. They have pointed the finger at President Obama and shouted, “bad president.”

Would someone care to remind the GOP of “George W. Bush and his Administration ? “

Two Wars and a busted US Economy under the Bush Administration – I would call that a “bad president.”

The US Economy started to unravel in October 2007, when the Baby Bush Administration was still holding court in Washington D.C.

Since that modern day Herbert Hoover Administration “propped” up the economy until Election Day, Americans “forgot: the financial sewer that was busting below ground and turning the American Dollar into play money.

President Obama’s Nice Guy Mistake

President Obama made the “President Jimmy Carter Mistake,” he came to Washington D.C., a nice guy and figured his fellow Americans were ready to get the country back on track.

In 2008, the American people thought they were voting for “A Gunslinger” or “A New Sheriff In Town.” What we got was a nice guy, who didn’t realize in a Crisis, some Americans step up and get busy. Some Americans have to know they are “out gunned” and the man or woman in charge is “In Charge !”

The American people in 2008 wanted a new “FDR” or a new “Harry S. Truman”, who wasn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and get busy. President Obama thought “holding hands and singing “Onward Christian Soldier” would work.” It didn’t.

Take Charge”

President Obama needed to “Take Charge.” He didn’t. He let “America’s Clown College” – the Congress of the United States of America – once again, call the shots.

The Congress of the United States of America only worries about one thing – “Re-election.” Congress is a sweet job, tons of perks and the paycheck is so fat these days that Federal Law keeps the salaries of Congressmen and Senators from being known to the public.

Once a freshman Congressman or senator is elected, then, they can concentrate on “re-election.” The rest of the day to day business is simple: “Don’t Rock The Boat.” “Play The Game.”

The youngsters vote the way the old heads want them to and they learn how to keep getting re-elected until they retire or die in office.

The Congress of the United States is no longer a respective legislative body – it is a Federally subsidized Retirement Home For America’s Most Gifted Con Artists.

President Obama is unfortunately – finished.

If he want be re-elected he needs to find a way to deliver a biblical Miracle like walking on water or raising people from the dead because he never understood an American president is suppose to be “Presidential.”

Presidential

Guts And Gonads”

An American President is suppose to have the “guts and gonads” to stand toe to toe with Satan or God and be able to look both in the eyes and do what has to be done. 20th Century Presidents: FDR, Harry S. Truman, Dwight David Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton have all understood The President Of The United States Of America is at all times “Presidential.”

Presidential Pink Slip

The American People already know President Obama is a “One Hit Wonder.” American Democrats should realize President Obama has run his race and need to find a candidate in the ranks, who can and will do the job.

The ole “incumbency” routine is nice, when the person in charge is fighting the good fight and pushing for forward movement in public policy and the economy. President Obama is still letting Congress keep him manacled, shackled and under house arrest.

He is still playing “Nice Guy,” while the Republicans are in their Bastille mode and handing out pitchforks, shovels, hoes, mattocks and directions to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Democrats it may be unprecedented, but, to push America Forward the time has come to give President Obama his “pink slip” and find a Democrat, man or woman, who is “Presidential” and ready to do the job to get America moving.

American Republican Presidency In A Nutshell

More Taxes, More War

While President Obama is already yesterday’s news; Romney is a rich, conservative Republican, who will only have two choices as an American Republican president – raise taxes or go to War.

US History shows Republican presidents lack creativity and imagination. Republican Theodore Roosevelt was “Too Good A President” and the Republicans kicked the colonel out of their “tea party,” because he had too much individual initiative to get things done.

Ronald Reagan also had too much individual initiative to get things done. A Democrat, who crossed to the Dark Side and became a Republican. Reagan was on a roll – then, the Assassination Attempt happened.

US History, especially since the end of World War II, demonstrates that Republican presidents are “puppets,” who understand they are there to have their strings pulled. They can do their “photo ops” with everyone from the Boy Scouts to the Daughters of the American Revolution.

They can carefully manage their historical legacy to ensure they get a presidential library built in their name and have a future United States Navy aircraft carrier named after them – but, the Republican president can not stray too far from party policy otherwise he end up in the company of Herbert Hoover and George W. Bush as “bad economic presidents.”

Hollywood Heroes

President Ronald Reagan was the first American president who had been an actor before becoming president.

From the founding of America until around the time of the Civil War candidates for president were farmers or military leaders. When America, as a nation, moved from the farm to the city, the whole “Lame Lincoln Lawyer Sillyness” kicked in. Americans bought off that they needed professional paper pushers to run the presidency and Congress.

America’s Democrats and Republicans still look for the rise through the ranks lawyer types to run for president, especially since the end of 1964. Time have changed.

America needs Leaders in The White House and Congress, who can respond on the fly and no they have made the right decision.

Internet and computer gurus will probably be the next evolution of Leaders who rise to national leadership.

In 2012, Democrats and Republicans should look to Hollywood. Henry Fonda always came off “Presidential” in his movies. It is too bad he never campaigned for the office.

Democrats and Republicans should pay more attention to the movies.

Michael Douglas in “The American President” and Harrison Ford in “Air Force One” are two actors that I would rush to the polls to vote for.  Martin Sheen portrayed the “President Of The United States Of America” in the series, “The West Wing.”  Mr. Sheen is another actor that if he ran for president I would be anxious to cast my ballot for.

Actors who have portrayed a “President Of The United States,” I’m sure have a better understanding of the overall commitment of the office and the job than some lackluster lawyer.

Lights, Camera, Mr. President ! ”

Since American Presidential Elections are National Popularity Contest both parties should start looking at great American actors, who have earned the respect and admiration of generation of Americans, rather, than just another “lackluster lawyer.”

Plus, actors often portray people in the United States Armed Forces. Once upon a time, members of Congress would usually serve in the military, Few Congressmen or Senators any more serve on active duty, so an actor who portrayed somebody on active duty already has more “Time In Service” and “Time In Grade” that the members of Congress.

Casting offices hire the actors for their roles, thus, I’m sure if Democrats and Republicans keep wanting to do their “Transition Team” scenarios, there will be plenty of people, who can step up and do the job to support the president. Hollywood hires technical consultants for movies, they should be able to teach the Democrats and Republicans how to hire the people to do the job.

Democrats and Republicans, “Fire The Lawyers; Hire the Actors.”

The 2012 Choice ?

Thus, 2012 is stacking up like 1972 American voter have a Democrat and a Republican to vote for.

Like 1972, Americans can only expect the parties to change.

What is the November 2012 Election Day Choice ? Buy a dart board, label each area: Democrat or Republican. Throw your darts and see which party The Fickled Finger Of Fate chooses most often. Then, Election Day you can blame Fate and not have to blame yourself for not having a “Leadership Choice.

2013 Hoovervilles ?

In 2013, Americans will still be angry about a “Mosquito-Infested Standing Water Swamp Economy.” A new Republican president and his new Republican “groupie” Congress will only have the standard two choices: “Raise Taxes and Go To War.”

Beginning in 2013, American Voter’s livelihood and wallets will remain destined for “Hooverville.” If the Republicans take the White House and Congress, then, American Voters’ sons and daughters should start paying attention to the news to try and figure out the next “Vietnam” that they will be “drafted” to serve in.

You can go ahead and put away your crystal ball, while America won’t have any new proactive, on the job, responsible, action-oriented leadership in 2013 and beyond, at least, President Obama will get his presidential library and Americans can start planning the Mitt Romney Presidential Library.

What ever happened to “Leaders” who worked and campaigned

for “The Highest Office In The Land ?”

Samuel E. Warren Jr. Editor’s Note Epilogue

I had finished writing this editorial, August 31, 2012. I had began editing the copy, when the Samar-Leyte Earthquake happened. The lights went out. While the laptop still ran off battery power, I decided to put the editorial away and concentrate on the events of the moment. September 4, 2012, I went back and read over the copy before arriving at the final draft.

America needs Leadership. The Democrats and The Republicans have quit looking for “Leaders” and go for party people who look good in a business suit and in front of a TV camera.

The American Presidential Campaign of 2012 is 1972 revamped, but, unless either party can reveal a Leader before November, then, “The Worser Of Two Evils Campaign” will continue to unfold to another “Ho-Hum, Dumb, Dumb Election Day.

” Extreme Fixer Upper ” — Photo for Katie — Take a camera and take a walk, sometimes you might be amazed at the sights you find near your front door. July 15, 2012 — I took the Nikon D 100 and strolled down the road. A few yards down the Barangay Baras Road from my front door at One Warren Way is this former Filipino bamboo home.
I saw this building and thought of my favorite American realtor, Katie. For three years, in the United States, my wife, Christy Warren and I used the Internet and I went to numerous websites trying to sell the more than 70 acres of Warren Land in rural southwest Missouri. We even listed the property with two other realtors and one realtor was a national American real estate firm.
Yet, it was a third generation Stone County, Missouri native, Katie Philipps of Tri-Lakes Realtors, who helped us to find a “buyer” and close the deal in less than three months Thanks to Katie, Our Favorite American Real Estate Agent, Christy and I are now living “Our American Dream” on the island of Leyte, in the Republic of The Philippines.  Nikon D 100 Photo by Samuel E. I’m a photographer. My mother loved the “Kodak moments” of life. I don’t believe a family birthday, anniversary, wedding or graduation ever passed that momma didn’t slip a camera out of her purse and take some snapshots.

It took me a few years to inherit momma’s photography habit, but, I did. I have also noticed in life sometimes when those monumental moments happen, grandparents and mom and dad get so wrapped up in the event they forget to bring a camera.

I don’t know if the relatives of Mohon Elementary, Pitogo Elementary and Juan Villablanca National High School remembered their cameras for these commencement exercises for the 2012 school year. There were a multitude of cell phone photographers and videographers at each of the events.

At JVNHS there was a professional photographer, wearing a khaki AGFA vest, who photographed the students in the Saint Francis of Assisi Parish church mass to the students leaving the stage at the JVNHS auditorium.

I trained as a news photographer, so I shoot photos like a reporter and not an official portrait or wedding photographer. Thus, for those family photos to frame and hang on the wall or to place in family photo albums, people will want to seek out the official event photographers.

Leniel Saldana smiles, while her son, Rayniel Saldana poses for a photograph at the Mohon Elementary School Graduation March 27, 2012.  This photo is an example of one of the photos that I lightened using software, before posting the photo to the web.  Photo by Samuel E. Warren Jr.

My Canon EOS 40 D camera and I were at Mohon, Pitogo and Juan Villablanca because Uncle Sam had nephews graduating. In case, grandparents, mom, dad, aunts, uncles and cousins forgot their cameras, then, you can visit Picasa Web Albums Samuel Warren or facebook Samuel Warren to see the photos

My wife, Christy Warren, also took some of the photographs at Pitogo and Juan Villablanca National High School..

There is a variety of photo sizes in the posted photographs because my camera is not a full frame 35 millimeter that usually prints out the 4 x 6 and 5 x 7 prints. I am a newsman, which means when I look at a photo I always see it through an editor’s eyes – thus, I tend to crop out distractions such as people walking into or out of a photo as the shutter snaps.

In all photographic situations, I take the light into account. After all, photography, is actually two Greek words that translate into “writing with light,” thus, I am always aware of the lighting conditions.

I use Irfanview and PhotoScape in working with photographs. I edited some of the Mohon and all of the Pitogo photos for light, which will explain why the Pitogo photos should appear brighter. If you glance at the Mohon photos, you should be able to tell that I only made the time to lighten up three or four.

Mac Mac Roa whirls like John Travolta in “Saturday Night Fever”, during this dance number at the Pitogo Elementary School Graduation Exercises March 27, 2012.  This photo is an example of  trying to crop the photo to bring attention to the dancer.  In group photography situations involving movement, it is always a challenge to try to isolate the subject or subjects without getting obvious distractions in the background of the photo.

I have explained my photography editing routine for any relatives, who want to download any of the photos. Be aware that the photos are different sizes if you plan to download a photo to a printer.

While I have used software to compensate for lighting in the photos, a relative may wish to use their favorite software program to enhance a photo that they would like to keep for a memory.

The Mohon Elementary School Graduation Exercises and the Pitogo Elementary School Graduation Exercises have already been posted to the web addresses I mentioned above. Good Lord willin’ and the creek don’t rise and I should have the Juan Villablanca National High School Commencement Exercise photos posted in a few days.

I’m a naturally curious person, so if you do download a photo, a few photos, or all of the photos, for your scrapbook or to post to your blog, I would ask that you send me an email to samuelwarren55@gmail.com because I’ would just like to know if the photos were important to a mom or dad, who might of forgot the camera.

Photography Patrol –  Katrina The Communicator.    Photo by Samuel E. Warren Jr.  The young woman smiling at the camera on the back of the motorcycle is Katrina.  I had my trusty Canon EOS 40 D camera and strolled the streets of Tacloban City.  I am in my "Sam The Photographer" mode, March 13, 2012,  to photograph man on the street moments and events that catch  my eye.  I strolled along the street and I heard, "Take A Picture."  I noticed the smiling Leyte Normal University students, in front of a Sari-Sari Store, so I raised the camera and clicked the shutter.

I turned to the sari sari store owner and asked for a Coca Cola.  The woman smiled at me.  The English to Waray language barrier was obviously in place.  Fortunately, Katrina, the student, explained to the woman and I got my soda.  Katrina, the student, also explained that she is majoring in Mass Communications at the university.

Warren Land Spring Cleaning

WARREN LAND

SPRING CLEANING

by Samuel Warren

The December sun created a beautiful day. There was no bone chilling nip in the air, which is normal for this time of year in southwest Missouri.

Sipping my coffee, I looked out the picture window at my blue U.S. Air Force flag flicking at the slight breeze.

Today would be a great day for Spring Cleaning.

I bundled up like I was embarking for an expedition to the Artic Circle. In Missouri, Old Timers say: “If you don’t like the weather, wait 15 minutes; it will change.” It might be a sunny day, but, it is December and Mother Nature enjoys messing with Missouri’s weather, especially in the winter..

I grabbed my camera and my rake. My two loyal cannine assistants, Sarge and Goldie raced past me and did a low crawl under the gate.. I stroll into the pasture trying to decide, which trail should I follow down into the holler. The dogs and I walk past the pond. The perimeter fence surrounds Warren Land.

It is a woven wire fence with a strand of barbed wire to keep the cattle inside.  The Fence Line Tree represents the boundary of Warren Land. The land beyond is DeLong Land that is now owned by a neighbor. Uncle Richard had owned the DeLong Land that rests on this side of State Highway 176.

The holler on DeLong Land flows under the perimeter fence on to Warren Land. The uniform blanket of leaves hides any hint of a vein of water.

At least, a half century worth ‘s  of leaves lie in the holler and conceal the spring from sight.

I rake away at the leaves beneath the fence line  . Raking back the dead brown dry leaves, I discover the saturated black leaves that have clogged and absorbed the spring’s water like a sponge.

A small wet patch of earth under the tree root indicates the

presence of the spring.  Photo by Samuel Warren

Sarge hears something in the distance and rushes off to investigate. Goldie sits down on the trail to watch me.

Goldie sits on the trail and watches me rake leaves.

I feel a slight breeze and hear two different chain saws buzzing in different directions beyond the horizon. I uncover the black damp leaves and once again sunlight reaches down and finds the puddle of water that flows over the rocks and underneath the leaves.

The Spring flows under the leaf bed, which burns giving off a thick column of

white smoke that flows along and up the holler.

I rake a grave-size mound of leaves into a leaf bed on top of the concealed spring. I hunker down with my cigarette lighter.. The flame catches like a rumor and spreads just as quickly.

Whoosh ! The flames ignite the leaves as quickly as a working man’s

paycheck on payday.

Like a losing politician on election day, in a matter of minutes the dry leaves are gone. Smoke flows along and up the holler. The large black mound of wet rotting leaves are left to smolder in the sunlight on the spring bed.

I go up the hillside and rake more leaves down into the stream to burn. Left behind on the hillside is the naked earth showing her exposed flesh of topsoil. The rich black soil has been hidden from the sunlight by years accumulation of leaves clinging to the hillside.

Rake away the leaves and you see rich, black topsoil on the hillside.

Over time, a great deal of time, the leaves would of rot away. The Catch 22 situation ,of course, is before the leaves can rot away, the trees will shed even more leaves, which stack layer upon layer of leaves on the landscape.

I’ve played in these hills and hollers as a kid, so I’m aware of the changes that have occurred to the land over the years. The leaves that I raked into the spring bed have been lying on the hillside since the 1960s,that’s a half century’s worth of leaves that had their decaying process abruptly sped up.

The decaying leaves have added ingredients to enrich the topsoil.

I spend a couple of hours in the holler raking and burning the leaves. Now, the spring can carry away the ashes and the cattle will have another source of water readily available.

This section of burnt, smoldering leaves in the holler only represents a small step along the course of this spring’s bed. Whether Spring Cleaning is done in April or December: it takes times. The challenge of Spring Cleaning the spring beds on Warren Land is it involves more than dusting or moving furniture.

My overall plan is to continue to try and clean away decades of leaves along the spring beds. Cattle like people drink a lot of water.
