Photos for Cousin Donna

Beach Ruins

BEACH RUINS IMG_5257_resized

I love to take photos. Every now and then, I actually browse my hard drive to see if there are photos that need to be deleted or a photographic gem buried in the images waiting to be discovered.

Ahoy !

I found these beach ruin photos. The warm sunshine, blue sky and cool Pacific water is a scene family and friends back in Missouri can appreciate. Usually in November in Stone County, Missouri, the weather get cold and the snow falls.

I bet Cousin Donna has already had to put wood in the furnace.  Wood heat is warm and comfortable.

Of course, I remember Uncle Richard sitting in a big chair by the old black cast iron heatin’ stove. He would open the creaking door and shove in a stick of old oak or sycamore wood into the orange hot coals and the bright gray ashes. Then, he would snatch up the iron poker and shove it against the stick of wood to get it to drop down on the other burning sticks.

Uncle Richard would grin and then sit back down in the chair to enjoy the warm, wood heat, while snowflakes would whip past the window.

As we say, in the Ozarks, “I reckon, it going to get a lot colder before winter ends.” While the photos will not make you feel any warmer, at least, they will remind you that in southwest Missouri, come April, the sun should start to shine again.

Donna, I hope you like the photos. They might work as a desktop background if you are in a tropical mode. I took these photos on a beach in Leyte in January 2012.

The Little Things Of Life “Washing Powders” Photo by Samuel E. Warren Jr,

WASHING POWDERS_3048_resized

Washing Powders

Martha Lou Marcum DeLong, my grandmother, back on the farm, near Abesville, Missouri, would call this elongated package, "Washing Powders."

In the Republic of the Philippines, this package is laundry detergent, which comes in a bar form. This long bar can be broken into about four pieces to be sold for laundry.

As a young single man, I did some laundry, usually I would save it up and let my mom do it, when I went home for a weekend from college.

When you move to live in a foreign country, the big differences are always obvious.  It is “The Little Things Of Life” you sometimes miss.

In 1988 in Angeles City, near Clark Air Base, you could not buy ketchup off base.  In the Johnny’s store in Balibago, a section of Angeles City you could buy UFC banana catsup, but, not tomato catsup.  I’m a country boy, I love tomatoes in my ketchup.

Furthermore, the one crop that always put and kept Stone County, Missouri on the world and national map is the big, red, juicy, mouth-watering tomatoes.

Fortunately in 2012, at Robinson’s Place in Tacloban City, you can buy Del Monte and Heinz tomato ketchup.  You can even buy Folger’s coffee in the three-pound can.

Still, I miss the big orange box of Tide on the store shelves. There are orange packets of Tide for laundry detergent in the Philippines  — it just ain’t the same.

On the bright side, bleach still comes in the gallon plastic jug.  Nikon D 70 Photo by Samuel E. Warren Jr.

Jeepney Photos

Editors, bloggers and webmasters, if you need photographs of jeepneys for your publication, blog or website, you might want to check out my “The Samuel E. Warren Jr. I Love Jeepneys Photo Album on Picasa.

Jeepneys lack the debonair style of the American “muscle cars” and would never be mistaken for a foreign race car. Yet, the Philippines’ jeepneys are flexible, versatile vehicles that have the toughness of an American farm pickup, the useability of a small school bus, the reliability of a sedan and the originality of the most unique taxi cabs in the world – found only in the Philippines.

Internet surfers, feel free to browse the photo album to see if you can find any photos that you would like to download to use as a desktop background or to package as your own desktop theme.

You might want to check the photo album every few days because I like to add photos to it . . .after all,

“I Love HEART_Nikon D 70 Photo by Samuel E. Warren Jr. 0008_resized Jeepneys.”

Black Market Movies In Asia Photo by Samuel E. Warren Jr.

Black Market Movies In Asia

Nikon D 70 Photo by Samuel E. Warren Jr.

I love movies. When I buy a movie or pay to see a movie, I want to know, “It is the ‘Real Deal.’” The demand for movies and TV episodes from the West always exceeds the reliable, credible and efficient supply methods into Asia.

The end result always seems to be “The Black Market Movies”, which are rip-offs that can have low-lighting, out of focus cinematography, sound that sometimes has audience reaction in the background and captions they make absolutely no sense at all.

Movies and TV episodes made in Hollywood usually have the “Pirated Movie” video footage and the FBI and Interpol movie warnings at the beginning.

In the Republic of the Philippines, the legitimate movies, always have the warning about unauthorized use results in a fine of several thousand pesos and possible imprisonment for a number of years.

The Black Market Movies usually don’t have the FBI, Interpol or NBI warnings, they usually either go to a screen that allows for Asian language selection or a screen that offers other movies on the DVD that can be played as well as the original.

You do not have to be a law enforcement official, a video technician or a sound engineer to realize that some of the illegal movies have been recorded off of a satellite TV channel and simply burned to disc for mass distribution. The tendency of a satellite TV signal to freeze on screen, during bad weather and the erratic pixelation across the screen are obvious indications that the video was recorded off of a satellite TV signal.

While Hollywood, London, Sydney, Toronto, Calgary and cities in the West seem to have problems getting the legitimate movies shown and distributed in Asian, “The Black Market Movie System” solves the distribution problem by quantity and the speed to have the product ready for viewers to watch or purchase.

In the photograph, the water buffalo is the animal that is found throughout Asia and has become a symbol that represents the countries and nations of the Pacific and the coconut is a reminder of the island cultures of the East.  The plastic CD case is a reminder that the “Black Market Movies” can even be displayed in what seems to be “official” or “legitimate” packaging.

In November 2012, the cast of “The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn, Part 1,” came to Manila to promote the release of Part 2. Today is November 28, 2012, which means “Black Market” copies of the movie should already be “On Sale” in the cities and rural areas throughout Asia. Nikon D 70 Photo by Samuel E. Warren Jr.

A jeepney is the most unique taxi cab on the planet.

There is only one place on earth to “Hail A Jeepney,” and that is the Republic of the Philippines,

These “Yellow Cabs Of Asia” are on the highways and byways of this island nation. Each jeepey is a unique “Checkered Cab” and “Artwork On Wheels” that reflects either the artistic taste of the driver or his family.

A jeepney is a jeep, a family sedan, a pickup and a school bus all rolled into one functional vehicle.

Tourists will look twice at the vehicles making their rounds in the nation’s capitol city of Manila and buzzing along the highways between the cities and in the cities of the islands of the Philippines.

Editors of newspapers, blogs, magazines, websites, books and any publications or electronic media, who needs a photo of a jeepney, then, visit my Picasa web album. Consider the use of any of the photos in the album as “Public Domain.”

Naturally, I would appreciate photo credit for the photos that I have taken, but, if you forget the credit line; no big deal. My hope is I have some photos here that you can use in your print or electronic publication.

Filipinos and Filipinas living and working overseas, if you have a grandfather, a father, a brother, a cousin or an uncle, who is a “Jeepney driver”, check out my photo album on Picasa and see if his photo is in the album; if not – I would hope that I have a photo of his jeepney.

Check The Samuel E. Warren Jr. I Love Jeepneys Photo Album on Picasa, every now and then, to see if I have added more photos because when it comes to jeepneys . . .”I Love Jeepeys.”

The Filipino Superman

This story aired on ABS CBN in the Republic of the Philippines on the evening news. Fortunately, some Filipino TV news like American TV news is rebroadcast later in the evening. I grabbed the Nikon D 70 and hoped I would end up with some shots for my blog. All the Filipino Superman photos in this story were taken by photographing TV news footage as it aired. Guess, I should probably call the mayor of Metropolis and let the chamber of commerce know about this news story. Couldn’t hurt to call The White House and give the president a heads up; Where is Olsen ?”

Excuse me, Mr. White, I have my own copy deadline to meet.”
