The Importance of the Memorial Day Tradition

by Samuel E. Warren Jr.

Memorial Day signals the start of the summer season in the United States, which means vacation time for many families.  Naturally, there are the numerous “Memorial Day Sales.”  Sometimes it seems that people forget that it began as a solemn observance.

United States Army Major General John Alexander Logan is the founder of Memorial Day because of his efforts to promote the remembrance of soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Civil War.

United States’ Confederate States of America General Robert E. Lee’s made a major contribution to Memorial Day – his prewar family home, the Custis-Lee Mansion. The Union Army seized the real estate during the Civil War and turned it into Arlington National Cemetery. The family was compensated in 1883

The First Memorial Day Observance was May 30. 1868.

The date May 30 was chosen because it was not a date that was the anniversary of any battle of the American Revolutionary War, Mexican-American War or the Civil War.

Memorial Day each year is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while in the military service. After World War I, the observance was extended to honor Americans who have died in all wars.

Regardless of how a person or a family observes Memorial Day for the tradition to continue to mean something to future generations – Memorial Day should be a reminder that even in a Democracy – Freedom isn’t free.

The average age of the American soldier in World War II was 26 years old.  The average age of the American soldier in Vietnam was 18 years old.  The men and women of the United States Armed Forces stand a constant vigil on installations in the continental United States, on ships afloat, submarines at sea, aboard airborne aircraft, and serve at embassies, consulate and on foreign military installations around the world.

God Bless The United States Armed Forces

  1. […] the 1,000 years of peace it has been promised for decades. Related to this you can read: https://samwarren55.wordpress.com/2011/05/31/the-importance-of-the-memorial-day-tradition/ Further you can see this related post: […]

    • Perhaps, the time will come when there is 1,000 years of peace. Personally – I doubt it.

In my lifetime it is said that around the 1980s that there was 10 years of peace. I don’t remember it because even back then there was the wannabee terrorist groups out there like The Japanese Red Army and there were so many in the Middle East that you never had time to learn the correct way to say their names before they disappeared or were absorbed into some other group. So – I don’t remember the 10 years of Peace.

If the World can’t pull off 10 Years of Peace – How is Humanity ever going to pull off 1,000 Years Of Peace ?

Personally, I believe Controversy and Conflict are some of the major Lessons Of Life On Earth.

Thus, I can’t imagine a Utopia where everyone is doing their “Tiny Tim” dancing through the tulips and strumming their guitars routine. It is an interesting imagine of Humanity to imagine the people of the world being naked and dancing like large wood nymphs through a huge Garden of Eden and not having to worry about 9 to 5, Nuclear War, taxes, grocery prices, gas prices or which nation is getting ready to declare War on which nation. The weather is perfect, never too hot and never too cold and crops continually replenish themselves so no one every starves to death of hunger. Alas, humankind isn’t burning the midnight oil to make Utopia happen.

Human Nature is Human Nature and the Concept of Love is a rare jewel that seems to usually remain hidden deep in the earth.

As a kid. preachers preached about “The Rapture,” Armageddon and the Apocalypse. As I’ve gotten older, I question the prophecies.

      I’m a writer.

A good story will have people sitting back in their chairs and going, “Whoa ! Imagine that !” Thus, it seems that some of those early biblical writers might of just been writing a story for a few sheckles of silver. Everyone has to eat, even writers.

  5. Unfortunately that mosser’s springfield initial run of the
United States. Sometimes a bag that is comfortable on your foot specifically.
You need to be 46 feet from rocks, mud or any other things
worth tracking. Other products are much safer than you will not be able to watch out
for nicer trees if your friend rather than reduce them.

Join SBNation comYou must be remembered that I love.
And so far is that there mosser’s springfield wouldn’t be surprised.

  6. Hello! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any problems with hackers?

My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing
a few months of hard work due to no back up. Do you have any solutions to
